I just bought this package as my first SLR for a class I am taking. I did research and found this to be a good deal. It comes with everything to get started taking pictures immediately. The package includes an extra battery, battery charger and even an 8g memory card. I like the camera so far, takes nice pictures and is fun to use. Only small drawback is it does not have liveview so you must look through the view finder when taking the picture. Not an issue for me but worth mentioning.

If your in the market for an entry level SLR I would not hesitate to buy this package deal.

The zipper on this product messed up after less than a month. This case fits the Canon XSi with kit lens pretty snugly. However, I do not like how it hugged (or did not hug, rather) the camera. If you have the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS Telephoto Zoom Lens attached to your XSi, it will not fit. Also, I'm a little embarrassed to carry this case around, because unlike the pictures online, in real life it looks like the seat of a bicycle.... so it looks like I'm carrying a bicycle seat (or as my sister likes to say -- that crotch piece) around.

This is a decently made holster for my Panasonic FZ35. However, I doubt it would fit anything bigger than a small SLR.



One thing that is poorly made is the belt loops for the holster (comes off), but I guess any belt loop for such a big holster would tear off. However, if the loops come off, the holster is still functional, and does not have gaping holes.

I bought the D40 kit a little more than one year ago. In a nutshell, I couldn't ask for anything more in a DSLR for newbs. It's got everything I need to learn the ins and outs of photography, it's very well built (and yes, even the kit lens), it's portable and dangit, it's extremely affordable to boot! It's been 100% reliable since day one, and it has become indisputable proof that the only difference between a great picture and a crap picture, is the photographer - not the equipment.



If I ever decide to upgrade to something higher up the food chain, chances are it'll be a Nikon.

I purchased this camera a year and a half ago and have had to send it back twice so far. IT seems to go out right before a special occasion so I have no pictures. I thought I was buying a good quality camera to record all the moments of my child growing up. The first time I had to send it to Nikon, the flash would not deploy, now it will not focus the majority of the time. I took over 30 pictures maybe 1 or 2 were in focus ( I thought automatic meant it would handle everything if I didn't want to be bothered). I am waiting to see how much Nikon will charge me to fix it this time but I am done with Nikon. I did a lot of research and thought I was purchasing a quality product but that is not the case, stay away from this if you want to catch those special moments because that is when it mostly likely will go out on you. i am starting the search again to see which one I will buy now. Hope I don't miss my son's birthday again.

This was my first DSLR and I bought it 6 months before first child was born. I cannot take a bad picture with this thing. Pair with the cheap SB-400 flash and you'll be taking professional pictures in any light with little effort. The fact that people still drop several hundred dollars on the virtually "disposable" "cute colored" point and shoots when a camera like this is just a couple hundred more is beyond me. This camera was my first venture into the DSLR world. I had been shooting with my trusty Canon point and shoot for years and although I got great quality photos, I was often frustrated with the lag time of a point and shoot.



I bought the Nikon D40 in February of 2008. The price has not changed much since and for good reason. This camera is very inexpensive for what it offers, with pricing only slightly higher than some higher end point and shoots.



Before I begin, You will notice in my reviews I do not go into the full specs of the camera. I feel as a consumer if I want to read that, I can read it here on Amazon in the information or I can download the manual from the manufacturer. So I do not include that. In my reviews I include my personal observations only.



The Good-



~ Turn on time is nearly instant. No more waiting for the camera to boot up and losing that precious shot



~ Even in high quality mode there is nearly no lag between pushing the button and the shutter firing. You get the shot you are going for every time.



~ I always forget to shut it off, It powers down itself after a bit to save battery.



~ Has all the capabilities of higher end cameras, yet an easy to use interface with an Auto mode. A great camera for someone who is interested in photography or someone who just likes to put it on Auto and edit with Photoshop later.



~ Action shots. You can take rapid fire pictures with this camera that come out perfect. I recently took photos through a chain link fence of my son's baseball game and got 8 shots from him leaving 3rd base to sliding into home plate that are priceless. TIP: Your speed relies on your memory card. Use cards with "ultra" or "premium" speed ratings for maximum speed. This is true whether you use a DSLR or a point and shoot from Walmart.



~ Lenses. There is a lens for every need. Macro, Wide angle, Zoom to the moon. If you want it Nikon has it and Nikkor lenses are top of the line. At the end of the day a camera is only as good as it's lens and I really beleive Nikon lenses beat the competition hands down.



~ Manual zoom/focus. I love this. Most newer nikkor lenses have auto focus capabilities if the thought of focusing on your own is intimidating but I love having the ultimate control over my focus and I find that I'm faster at zooming and focusing than the auto feature on the camera is a lot of the time so I tend to just keep it on manual. This camera does not have an automatic zoom and I assure you, you will not miss it.





The Bad-



~ Size. It really is a pain to carry this thing around a fair or while chasing children around. It's big, and that uber expensive lens juts out just asking to be knocked off a wall. The neck strap is quit uncomfortable. This has been my biggest pet peeve with this camera and the reason I recently purchased another point and shoot for every day and will leave my Nikon sitting at home except for photo shoots and high action activities.



~ Framing. You cannot frame your shot with the LCD screen with this camera. Nikon finally added that feature on the D90. At first this made me crazy, what with having been a Canon point and shoot girl for years. And to be honest this is still slightly annoying. I have talked to other photographers who don't miss it but for me, when I'm shooting my kids' lives I'd like to be a part of it too, not with my face stuck in a viewfinder. I just feel detached when I have to look through a viewfinder.



~ Video. Nikon dropped the ball on this one. The Nikon D40 is capable of recording video but does not have audio capabilities.



~ Flash- The flash on the D40 is very powerful allowing you to take great night shots. It does tend to be a bit much in dim conditions and causes a bit of washout. My biggest pet peeve with the flash is that it's so low profile I usually end up blocking it with my finger. I shoot quickly, zooming/focusing and clicking and if I don't remember to take my hand off after I zoom/focus I'll block the flash. It's annoying and I've lost some great shots that way.





All in all if you want to move up to a DSLR go for the D40 in lieu of some of it's more pricey competitors. It is versatile and high quality enough for the professional photographer, yet inexpensive and easy enough to use for those who just chase the kids around the playground. Due to it's less than ideal portability this camera likely will not replace your trusty point and shoot, but it will be a great addition to your memory preserving arsenal.

 "Brilliant for a beginner like myself" 2009-12-02

I purchased this camera because I love photography and for a while now have dreamed of getting an DSLR. I have played around with a lot of the features on my various Point and Shoots but I wanted something better. After going through a lot of reviews, questioning my friends with DSLRs already and knowing my budget I purchased the D3000. I was not disappointed. I am no expert on photography and am frequently going to webpages and books to see the best ideas for certain shot situations but this camera so far has done very well for me. It gives you everything you would need to start out and learn the functions. it is slightly lighter than a lot of the the other SLRs out there which for me is excellent since I travel a decent amount and makes carrying it around these places no problem. One thing I thought could have been better is the Guide mode which pretty much is an easier way to use the different settings (portrait, landscape, etc) modes on your camera, and if you don't know how to set the camera in these modes already then maybe you should either do some more reading, or go back to your point and shoot (which also has some of these functions). Overall I am so far extremely happy with this camera and can't wait for my upcoming trips to really push the envelope of the types of shots I take.

I'll compare this to the Canon Rebel XS, since I played with the XS heavily recently and also because they are the same target market (entry level DSLR).



Pros:



* Less mushy shutter button

* Nice roughness on the mode dial

* Great rough texture on the whole body for a nice grip

* Has more buttons on the left than Canon, the latter is way biased toward right-handed operation

* Bigger, 3" LCD screen

* More autofocus points

* Quieter auto-focus

* You can start zooming and playing with the last picture taken right away (Canon would show you the picture, but you had to press a button to start zooming/etc.)

* Autoplay "slideshow" of the last burst of pictures you took; I really missed this when I was using the Canon

* Viewfinder grid (the Canon didn't have one)

* More informative LCD (I like the aperture display)

* Clearer written material



Cons:



* Continuous shooting mode bizarrely slows down after a few shots. I tried turn off the Active D-Lighting, but it didn't help.

* Battery doesn't lock into place as well as on the Canon, I can feel it rattling a bit

* I noticed a couple of hot pixels on dark backgrounds (but to be fair, it's hard to find any sensor with zero dead/hot pixels)

* Minor, but annoying: Nikon rounds your pictures left to "1.0K" instead of a true value

* Autofocus seems slower

* Still some dumb UI decisions, like if I want to constantly do 2-sec self-timer photos, I have to keep reseting it. And the continuous file numbering is off by default, meaning it resets every time you format or do a new memory card. Overall, Nikon is amazing with ergonomics/UI design, but they are not perfect.

* It is missing what have come to be standard features in DSLRs these days: the XS came with auto exposure bracketing and auto white balance bracketing; the D3000 has neither.



Summary: Anyone on a budget or just getting their feet wet with DSLR technology and stepping up from point-and-shoots will be blown away by the features and image quality. Those people looking for a more refined or feature-filled DSLR experience should look at higher-end (and more expensive) models.

 "Not worth your hard-earned $$." 2009-11-23

A. Little is right if you're going to treat this DSLR as a fancy P&S camera, but I think the point of buying a camera of this type (as opposed to some of the cheaper P&S's) should include: being able to get better IQ, take faster action shots and to shoot in darker conditions. We can't minimize the D3000's reduced noise handling ability in relation to the less expensive and older D40 it purports to replace (the third such attempted replacement, I may add) ([...]). You simply can't take good indoor shots (or darker) without ugly flash glare or more expensive lighting at ISO 200 on these models (can you do it at 400?). In addition, I challenge any hobbyist to be able to tell the differnece between the D3000's "faster frame rate" and the D40 in actual use (3fps v. 2.5fps); you'd have to go to 5 or 6 fps and a higher baffle before you get a workable difference, at least for my hard-earned $$. (One of the greatest cameras of all time, the Canon 5D Mark II, barely does 5fps). The D3000's GUIDE Mode will annoy anyone who actually learns the relationship between ISO, Aperature, and Shutter Speed and while useful for a newbie, not something you'd want to use for too long. The D3000's LCD is slightly larger physically, but the resolution isn't really increased from the D40 so the image produced isn't all that fetching; it's not bad, but it doesn't exactly add to its buy-me factor, either. Does this make the D3000 a bad camera? Of course not, its a good camera, but you can still get a NEW D40 for less and maybe we can't blame Nikon using fluff to try to boost its newbie/Noob sales or because it can't coax the same noise handling ability from its larger sensor.



Finally, yeah, the D3000 does have a few more MP's, but so did the D40x and so does the D60 and so do MANY P&S's...and they're still selling new D40's (and oh yeah, the D3000 is dropping to where it (along with its great VR lens) almost matches the D40's price and my earlier arguments become a bit moot)...don't buy into the MP Hype the sales people use to sell camera's (don't be a Noob); unless you are printing larger than 16x20 posters, 6 MP is all you will ever need, and its not a reason (by itself) to give up your hard earned $$. If you "need" things like DOF, older lens compatibility, flash control, higher frame-rate, a usable ADL/ADR assisted camera (students of photography don't really need live view...), then go for the D90 - my .02 =)
