 "Nikon 18-55mm VR Lens" 2010-02-08

Basically, it seems a new Nikon lens, so I expect it should work well.

However, sometimes it cannot focus automatically.

This is the unsatisfactory point.

 "Great kit lens" 2010-01-26
By Ericka James (San Francisco, CA)
Versatile kit lens. I plan on buying the 55-200mm as well so I can have the full zoom range of the 18-200mm (which I will admit I still rent for shooting concerts, but can't imagine carrying it around all the time). This 18-55 is a great wide angle zoom lens that is good for shooting outside, nighttime photography (no flash), and shooting with a flash. I found it challenging in low light conditions and resorted to using my 1.8 35 and 50mm lens when I didn't have a flash. It's great for shooting architecture, especially with a tripod. Considering it's price point everyone should have this lens.

"Garbage lens - have sent back 3 of them" 2010-01-08
By T $ (USA)
I work for a firm that does inspections using cameras. I recently bought 3 D40 kits that came with this lens- All three lens broke within first month of use ( by 3 different architects, so NOT operator error. The plastic gears inside just break. Fortunately had bought warranty through Ritz and sent back to be replaced. Very cheaply made lens - Stay Away.

"Maybe the Only Lens You'll Ever Need" 2010-01-04
By Tiffany Ann (Black Diamond Bay)
This is the lens that came a D300s that was a gift from my sister for my last birthday. She knew I desperately wanted a second body (camera body that is, though sometimes I wish I could swap the one I was born with) and she didn't want to give me a camera without a lens and she didn't want to give me one with the kit lens.

I already had two lenses in this range, a Tamron 17-50mm, f/2.8 and a very pricy Nikon 17-55 f/2.8, so I never would have purchased this lens for myself. That said, surprisingly I use this lens a lot. I have a lot of lenses, have spent a virtual fortune on them, yet this is my walkabout lens. I never, ever leave home without a camera round my neck. I'm always ready to shoot and this is the lens that's on my camera when I lock my door and get in my car.

It weighs way less than the pricer Nikon and six ounces less than the Tamron. It focuses fast as I can blink, stays locked on and speaking of focus, it focuses ridiculously close. The images are tack sharp, the VR works a treat, so I get great photos in low light situations. And I get virtually no distortion from either end, wide or long. And as an added treat, you can get this lens with its better than excellent optics for less than two hundred dollars.

For many, this may be the only lens they'll ever need. I know I like it. However, if I know I'm going to be shooting inside a lot and don't want to use a flash, or I've I'm going out late, oftentimes I'll use one of my other lenses, because of the lower f/stop, VR not withstanding. All in all though, this is a great lens, one that will serve you in good stead for years and years.

 "Good product." 2009-12-14
By Jason Prado
Recently purchased the 18-55mm VR lens to go with my new Nikon D40X. The product arrived as indicated on time. So far, everything has been great. It's the only lens that I've been using so far and pictures are coming out nice. This lens keeps a good balance with the camera body, keeping it lightweight and comfortable.
