"The BEST lens I've ever owned" 2010-02-17
By gotsoul (Mission Viejo, CA USA)
I am a Nikon shooter for over 25yrs and this is hands down the best lens I've ever had. Yes it's very expensive, but it's well worth it. The sharpness and the low light capability is astounding. I have a D700 and the combo is incredible. It is a heavy lens, especially combined with the D700 it can be tiring if shooting all day. The results make up for it though. Get a good camera strap (I bought a Tamrac one) and that helps. Also suggest B+W MRC UV filter(they are the best) for protection.

other lenses: 50 1.4f AFS, 85 1.4f, 80-200 2.8f, 35 2f. Also use it on my D80 with exclnt results, but not as ideal with the cropped sensor...

 "consider an alternative" 2010-01-20
By Jim Mcculloch (Austin, TX USA)
This is not actually a review of the lens, which I do not own, but its price. The old nikkor 35-70 f/2.8 is still widely available, and the optics (according to reviews I have read) are essentially indistinguishable. Certainly mine has superb optics. Neither lens has vr. The difference between 24mm and 35mm at the wide end is significant, but in my opinion is not $1500 significant. (I picked my 35-70 up recently for $300 used and I am very pleased with its performance.) So if you have the money, go for the 24-70. If you are strapped for cash, you can still find a terrific alternative, the 35-70, much more cheaply.

My 3 star rating is entirely about the price as compared with a very good alternative.

 "Fantastic Mid-range Zoom!" 2010-01-15
By J. T. Hwang (Chicago, IL)
I was a bit skeptical about all the positive reviews of this lens, after owning it for a month and using it frequently, I would have to agree with all the positive reviews of this lens. Yes, it's heavy in comparison to prime and consumer lenses, but this is light compared to 70-200 or 80-200/2.8. Construction is very good, AF-S focusing is quick and quiet, zoom is pretty smooth (definitely don't have issues here), and lens hood is heavy duty and included with the lens. Takes sharp and contrasty photos with my D700, though I have other lenses covered by the focal lenth of this lens, I use the 24-70mm unless I need a faster lens.

Few things I didn't know about before purchasing this lens. 1) Lens will cause shadows with onboard D700 flash with hood (24-33mm with hood off) which will require me to buy an external flash (which I planned to do), very minor vignetting at 24mm wide open aperture (I notice it but not to the point where I would edit out), will focus very close (est 12-14") for almost macro territory, bokeh is surprisingly good, I don't feel the need for uv filter with the hood in place, lens is water resistant (similar to D700) and liking that I can shoot outdoors w/o having to worry about water getting into optics or electronics.

Some may say it's a bit expensive for mid-range zoom, but it is money very well spent (at least for me). I'm glad that I could enjoy this lens now, than having to wish that I had this lens some five years from now. VR would be nice but unnecessary as D700 takes great photos at ISO 6400, the only way to make this lens better is to wish for a f1.4 version.

 "Best Lens EVER!!" 2010-01-09
By Patrick Smith (Augusta, GA)
I bought this for me d300 and it is an AMAZING lens. The build quality is outstanding!! The only downfalls it that it is heavy and takes a 77mm filter, but the pros defiantly outweigh the cons on this lens. I shoot concerts for my job and this lens is awesome for the job and does crystal clear low light pictures.

Definitely a lens to buy.

"Very pleased with this lens" 2009-12-17
By Richard C. Pruitt (Chesapeake, VA)
I was frustrated with low light shooting situations, don't care for flash much, so this was my choice. This lens is the one that just stays on my D5000 body. Travel shots, catching the grandkids at play or whatever, it is the most universal lens I could ask for. It is super fast to focus, produces razor sharp images and the weight helps steady things a bit. I also wanted the new 70-200mm F2.8, but I know I will do more shooting in this range than any other. I love it.

 "Great lens" 2010-01-27
By James Frick (Traverse CIty, Michigan USA)
This is an excellent all purpose lens. It has reasonable speed, but I wish it was a little faster, but I could have spent a lot more money for that speed. Very workable lens for my casual needs. The vibration reduction feature is excellent, I love that. Excellent price as well - very happy with the lens and the purchase overall.

 "Love the lens" 2009-11-27
By Visaharaja Ravindar
I bought this item after reviewing previous ratings and a LOT of research as I was concerned about the budget. Initially my plan was to buy the 70-300 mm Non VR lens. It was within my budget and was thinking 300mm would help me to cover more distance.

But after reading reviews and comparisons I chose 55-200mm VR.

Reasons:

1. VR helps me a lot as I am interested in taking Sunset/Sunrise and do not have a dedicated external flash.

2.100mm doesn't make big difference. Read a quote by Ansel Adams "Best wide-angle lens? 'Two steps backward' and 'look for the ah-ha'" mentioned in Kenrockwell page.

So thought, for 300mm I need to move forward few steps, ha ha.

3. Have Nikon D40 so wanted a lens which works in AF mode. 70-300mm doesn't.

So bought in Oct, love this and its awesome. Except the add-ons, they are not very good quality materials. But this deal is cheaper than the lens in other sites.

Thanks for people who wrote the reviews....

BTW, the lens makes some noises while auto focusing and (releasing shutter if VR is on), and its normal.

 "will break down" 2009-09-27
By eyeinzsky75 (US)
The lens breaks down easily! The lens is supported on the camera by mechanically weak clippers. After some time (< 1.5 years in my case) the strain broke down the clippers. I always keep the camera in a cushioned case, and it suffered no shocks or drops.

"Same as the original lens on the D40" 2009-09-20
By FourKids Books (Schaumburg, IL)
I recently dropped my relatively new D40 and the lense would no longer work. I contacted the company I purchased my camera from for assistance and they said I needed to buy a new camera. I found this item on Amazon and thought I'd give it a try. It is, indeed the identical lens that came with my camera. The price was fair, delivery quick and I couldn't be happier.

 "Fun lens" 2010-01-07
By Craig Barker (Rocklin, CA)
This is a great lens. Bought it for my wife as an upgrade to her DX 55-200mm f5.6. We have used that lens for about 4 years and love however it was a bit short for shooting our daughters sporting events. The extra 100mm is very nice and the quality is terrific. I would say we are novice photographers and enjoy snapping photos. This lens is fast enough for the casual use we give it and has not let us down at all. The build quality feels very good in your hands. It is heavy relative to the shorter lens but not too heavy that your hands are yearning to put it down. Lens hood is solid as well. I like that it has a metal mount vs. a plastic mount on our other NIKON lenses. Auto focus is smooth and zoom ring is smooth. I would heartily recommend this to any NIKON owner. Enjoy it.

 "Great 300mm lens - hand held" 2010-01-04
By J. Teague (Georgia - USA)
This is a great lens for outdoor sports or wildlife photography. You can make sharp handheld photos at 300mm. I took several photos at Disney on the safari ride (from a bouncy truck) at 150-300mm ... and they came out sharp enough to print at 8x10 and frame. (My wife hung them in the living room, so they have to look pretty good). Probably not the best for low light ... need $$ fast glass for that.

"Be aware -this is not a true 300mm lens - fuzzy above 200mm" 2009-12-28
By Birder 2000 (California)
I've used and enjoyed this lens for about ten months and for sports and large animals it's terrific. Fast and crisp focus from 70 - 200mm, as the previous review stated. But I too notice the drop off in sharpness after 200mm, especially with small birds. The problem is you feel suckered into going to the full zoom, because it appears sharp while photographing, but unfortunately the quality is disappointing when you get home to see what you've got. I also put the lens through home testing - at least 1/1000 shutter and tripod, to find it's the lens at full zoom that's the problem.

I still love the lens for most applications (big and/or close birds), but it shows you what A LOT of $$$$ you have to spend on high-end optics to get to the professional level.

 "Sharp Zoom Lens" 2009-12-28
By S. Tsoy (San Francisco)
I bought this lens together with my D90 kit in Nov.,2009.

I had no time to use it extensively.

When I tested it at last week end, I found that it was quite sharp, but the auto-focus was not too fast.

I was not sure whether it was due to the D90 or this lens.

 "Great Beginner Zoom Lens" 2009-11-24
By Kenneth Eaton (Ann Arbor, MI)
Overall, I'm quite happy with this lens. I just bought my first DSLR about 2 months ago (the D3000) and bought this about one month ago. Since I've only had it for a short time, I can't speak for its longevity, but from what I found in my research it looks like these will last a long time if you're careful with them. The all plastic construction was one concern I had before buying it, but after holding one and getting to use it, it does feel solid and built well for a $200 zoom lens.

The VR definitely comes in handy with this, too. The zoom power actually took me by surprise. Obviously I'm new to SLR photography, but it was a pleasant surprise to see just how close you can get to your subject with this lens. I'm very happy with this purchase.

 "Light and Sharp!" 2009-11-10
By YakButter (Orange, Ca)
What a wonderful lens!

I bought this on a whim. I had the 18-200 VR, but I knew if it's shortcomings resolution-wise.

I read a lot of great reviews for this lens and figured for $200, why not?

I was blown away at how sharp this sucker is! It is incredibly light and small as well.

Obviously for night use, it will need a super steady hand or a tripod, as it is not 2.8... but during the day and dusk it is exceptional. The VR REALLY helps a lot.

Alsom the 200mm is more real than the 18-200's 200mm, if that makes sense. I did a side-by-side test and this lens went a tad further. Weird, huh?

For outdoor sports, landscapes, etc. this lens is a MUST BUY for telephoto work.

Did i mention that it is really sharp, even wide open.

 "Nice mid range lense" 2009-10-16
By Richard H. Miller
I picked this up for taking photos at my daughters soccer games and I have not been disappointed. In bright sunlight it is great for capturing rapid action sequences of photos from the sidelines - making for some fantastic action shots. In less than optimal lighting, it wont rapid fire, but still takes nice quality photos - I just have to time it better. Good solid purchase.
