 "Awesome camera!!!" 2010-01-28
By Bicycle Bum (De Pere, WI United States)
I got this camera for a birthday present last week and love it. All the adjustments are so easy, I wanted a portable to compare with my D40 and this fits the bill, plus it is so cool! I love he touch screen, I think the negative reviews it is getting are from people who don't learn how to use it. The only thing I would change is to make the charger smaller, it is kinda bulky to lug around with you, I guess I will be getting a spare battery.

 "Everything but the Picture" 2010-01-20
By Anthony Pontarelli (Grand Haven, MI USA)
This camera has everything. Every option the novice would ever need...ISO adjustment, black & white option, high mega-pixel, touch screen, etc. I was willing to pay more for the touch screen and it did not disappoint. After becoming quit comfortable with my ipod-touch...this touch screen was a welcome new toy. I read all the reviews and most had the same theme...fun camera, loved the touch-screen but didn't take quality pictures. I threw caution into the wind and ignored the negative. I was in love with this touch screen idea. Anyway, after playing around for a while I found option after option including the ability to crop your photos right there on the camera...how great is that? I could even turn a regular photo to black & white with the push of a button. So what's the problem you ask? ...and why the negative review?

Plain & simple the reviews were dead on...CAMERA DOESN'T TAKE GOOD PICTURES. I should add that it did take some clear pictures but if I had to assign a percentage I would say 80% of the picture were blurry. I read every review on how to adjust the ISO & everything else. I even took it to my buddy the camera tech geek. He had no luck in getting consistent quality pictures either. He said the camera was just "too gimicky." I took the camera out New Years Eve and out of the 20 or 30 pics we took...only 3 were good quality (very dissapointing). So while I loved the camera for it's options, size & touch-screen...it just didn't take consistent quality pictures.

I have since returned the camera and purchased a Cannon elph (dont remember the exact name or model). All I want is a small portable camera that takes reasonably good quality pictures. I don't know much about camera's at all and don't really want too...just want to shoot & view, print and most importantly capture memories. This new Cannon was cheaper and out of the box took great quality pictures...probably 90%-95% of my pics are crystal clear and I didn't have to do a thing...just point and click. I strongly recommend waiting until Nikon fixes the picture quality before buying. Hope this helps.

"Great lens, especially for low light, no flash work" 2010-01-07
By AJR
It's fast and great optically. For portraits or poorly lit subjects where a flash is not allowed (or not wanted) this is the perfect lens. On a DX format camera it's a bit long (field of view is about 75mm equivalent) for some inside work, a 28 or 35mm focal length might be a better option (but 1.8 is the faster you can get in those focal lengths).

"Good stuff. Worth every penny." 2010-01-06
By Micah
I had two of the previous generation of 50/1.4 AF before owning this lens. I've tried both versions on a D2x, d90, a d300, d3, and d3x. This is the better version, and it's really the top of the heap, short of the MF 1.2 or a bloody Leica. So if you want sharp and AF simultaneously, this is your best bet.

Yes, it could be a touch sharper wide open. It could also be five times more expensive. It's sharper edge to edge than the old version at all settings. It's sharper in the corners than the Sigma or the Canon 1.2.

All around I'm quite happy.

I am nervous about only one thing: while blowing dust off I tapped the rear element with the plastic tip of my blower bulb. It made a quite resonant "TING". Looking at the diagrams on Nikon's site, it is a very thin element. Moreso than the previous generation. For the most part, this seems to be a much more robust build than the previous 1.4AF. (I owned two because I pretty nearly destroyed my first one...it did still work even so.) But that rear element does give me pause and I now try to shift it forward before and after mounting it (when I can remember).

Optically, can't complain. Focus doesn't seem any faster or slower than the previous version. It's more comfortable to hold since nothing spins or moves externally while it's focusing. It's quieter, which is nice in the dim situations I often use it it.

It actually focuses properly on my d90, unlike other fast nikon glass. (I've tried many d90's and it seems that d90's just don't focus precisely with their center point with large aperture screw driven lenses.)

Good stuff. If you shoot film or FX get one. If you have a DX, get the 35/1.8 AFS. If you have the 35/1.8 AFS, get this too! If you are using your Nikon DSLR for video, you should get like ten of these. Ok, maybe one. But still, it's that nice.

Hope you found this useful. Enjoy shooting!

"Nice for DSLR without the internal motor" 2009-12-19
By Anthony Loh (NY, USA)
This is an excellence "fast" lens - very sharp and the auto focus is fast and accurate. This is one that you want when shoot in a low light environment where flash is not permitted.

Having said that, however, it is so much more expensive than the Nikkor 50mm f1.4D without significantly improvement on the optical quality. If you own a entry level Nikon dSLR (e.g., D40/x, D60, D3000, D5000) without an internal motor to power the D-series lens (or lenses without internal motor of their own) then, you will like this one. If you own a more advance dSLR (D80, D90, D300/s) then, you are better off economically with the 50 f1.4D.

"Sharp, well constructed, and AF-S; great normal lens!" 2009-12-16
By S. S. Malhotra (Norwalk, CT)
Pro's:

I initially got this prime because it was THE ONLY lens at the time that had an f-stop less than 2.8 AND AF-S on my old D40x BACK in December of 2008 (other than the $6,000 200 f/2).

Thankfully, Nikon updated their DX AF-S lineup this year aggressively with the Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras as well, but I'll review that later.

This is a bokeh machine, not as creamy and perfect as the Nikon 85 1.4, but pretty nice. But bokeh is a personal thing, and some people find it a little nervous in this lens (your call).

AF-S is dead silent, hunts very little in low light, and tracks well.

Light weight and a nice hood is included.

Works awesome on my N75 film body (and I can't WAIT to use it a D700!!)

Con's:

AF is apparently slower than previous 50mm models that are AF only (not AF-S).

A bit long on a DX body to be considered "normal"(75mm equivalent), but still useful as a portrait lens (just not AS close as say a 85mm on an FX body).

I just don't use it as often as I'd like and always reach for the 35 1.8G as my "go to" prime ONLY because 50mm on a DX is too long for a general purpose lens.

Upshot:

A worthwhile purchase, an excellent AF-S revision to older models, and perfect choice for those AF-motor-less users (D40/x/D60/D5000) who need a portrait/fast prime lens. Also works on FX/Film bodies (but not compatible with film bodies prior to the N75 era, ie

P.S.

I have also found DxO Optics Pro v 5.0, Elite Edition Photo Enhancing Software for Mac & Windows. a priceless software tool with this camera/lens combination (This "module" is available with my D200 + 50 1.4G, helps give my shots an "extra stop" of noise reduction.). I always shoot RAW images and use DxO to convert to TIFF or jpg.

 "Perfect" 2010-02-01
By TEXAS12 (Eastern Shore)
I did quite a bit of research before buying this camera, and I am quite pleased. I am a pro photographer who uses the Nikon SLR system, and was looking for a point and shoot. Although I am a loyal Nikon shooter, I realize that Nikon has not been the leader in the point and shoot market. However, this model has a great feel to it, sturdy and solid. It is small enough to take anywhere, and makes amazing photos,I love it. I think that a lot of the negative hype about this camera is from people who do not read the user's manual, and who do not have any skills in the area of photography. In my experience with this camera, it performs exactly as I expect it to- because I read the manual! Trust me, it's an awesome little camera.

"Good Camera but I expected more" 2010-01-30
By Suraj K. Kurian (Madison, WI)
I was expecting the S570 to be the best purchase ever. I used to have an s210 that took some great pictures. The one think I loved about it was it RARELY ever took a bad picture. The s570 I thought would add on the already existing greatness of the s210. While it does take good pictures, every now and then I get shaky/blurry pictures.

The biggest complain would be that for a point and shoot it does not automatically pick the best mode to take a picture in. Even when I do pick modes, it doesn't work the best. Maybe I need to get better at picking the right modes for a picture but lets just say with the amount I've tried, its not obvious exactly what mode you need t be shooting in. The image stabilization isn't very great in it. The Camera itself was a little bigger than I thought it would be, but it looks great though.

The wide angle picture is great, you can capture way more with this up close than compared to other cameras (my reference was a Cannon sd1200. Although, I had to take the picture twice to get a good shot. The battery life is very good. I had it last about 2 days with frequent use. the 5 x zoom and the extra MP are definitely a bonus for the price. Maybe my expectations were just too high. I wasn't very thrilled with it.

 "Battery hog" 2009-12-01
By episcocrank (New York, New York USA)
Six months ago I bought this as a snapshooter, and that's about what it is. The size is handy and the controls are easy to understand and use. But the picture quality is nowhere near as sharp as I expected and some of the colors in the images can be over-the-top bright. The most infuriating thing is the battery life. Using good quality alkaline AA batteries, I'm lucky if I can get 50-60 pictures. If I take the batteries out between uses I can sometimes stretch it to 75 or 80. Would not buy this camera again.

"Lens cap strap [With modification}" 2010-01-07
By Joseph P. Portas (Elbert Colorado)
Works a promised with one exception:

Strap [just a stretchy cord] is too short for a lens longer than a standard lens.

I bought it for my NIKON D90 with 18-105 lens .... worked fine for a while but broke the cord after a month of use.

If the cord were longer I'm sure it would not have broken!

Easy fix ........ I replaced the 'cord' with a much longer 1/8" black ribbon from my wife sewing supplies.

Can remove the metal clip at the 'lens barrel' area with needle nose pliers and the 'dot' decal comes off easy

on the 'cap end' so you can rethread any length cord you want. Just make knots at the cap end and the lens end so

the keeper is secured. Works great ....... no tension on the keeper!

Then again just buy another "Keeper" they are so cheap!

I purchased two one for a 58mm lenses and one for 77mm lense I was afraid that it breaks when i put it to the bigger lenses so i did with care trying not to open it to much to get inside, also I cleaned the surface with cleaning clothes trying to avoid the loss of sticking.

And so far none of the defectives or quality issues of other reviews have happened, remains one piece, remains attached to the cap keeper.

the cap keeper is cheap, but i leave the cap dangle with no extra care, i put and remove the cap often on my 77mm lenses because i have not buy the protection filter and it remains on good shape, no signs of warning.

I recommend the product, but i took the other reviews in mind on "my instalation instructions"

I received this lens cap keeper as part of a package when I bought my digital SLR. I have been using it for a month and a half (once a week or so), and today I looked down while taking pictures and my lens cap was gone! There was just an empty lens cap keeper dangling from my lens.  "Very important DVD to get advantage of Nikon CLS feature in your camera" 2009-12-29
By Enche Tjin (Philadelphia, PA)
Nikon School presents A Hands-on Guide to Creative Lighting is very very important to learn how to use Nikon creative lighting system CLS). So what is CLS? It is automatic flash system that built-in your camera and some Nikon flashes. If you have Nikon D90 DX 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S VR DX Nikkor Zoom Lens or more advanced camera and Nikon Nikon SB-900 AF Speedlight Flash for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras, you can practice CLS right away.

The host of this DVD is Bob Krist and Joe McNally. The material are very well structured and articulated even for beginners. Learning about lighting involve a lot of technical issues in the past and might turned off many people from studying it, but Bob and Joe make it simpler and easier to understand. They take advantages of the wireless commander in the camera and Speedlite and use automatic adjustment (TTL) to adjust the light. So thanks God, minimal amount of math is used here.

Bob discusses about standard studio portrait in the beginning of the DVD and then introduces Joe later. Then, they worked in the various fields showcasing multiple ways you can do with the system. They do wedding portrait, vacation portrait, environmental portrait, and dance. It starts with a very simple one light photography and then it expands up to 11-12 strobes. Highly recommended for enthusiasts and it is absolutely must get for aspiring professionals.

"It Was Worth the Money" 2009-12-01
By Michael Erlewine (Big Rapids, MI United States)
This DVD quickly progresses from a single flash unit to multiple flashes, more than you or I will ever own or want to own, like 13 units!. However, that is not as intimidating as it may sound because we can always substitute light sources we do have handy (lamps, spots, floods, even the little aluminum shade lights our dad had, etc) for some of the extra flashes. And using even three lights covers most of it.

The beginning stuff is a little tedious as it should be, but once they actually start using equipment, things are good. And when Joe McNally steps in, the pace can get faster than I can follow, and they don't always tell us things like which lens they are using until after a while, if ever.

Was it worth it? Yep, because seeing is believing and monkey-see, monkey-do is the name of the game. All I have to do is copy what they do and be as creative as I can with it all.

This DVD is really geared for the Nikon CLS (Creative Lighting System) of wireless remotes and a commander, which is a very cool and compact system of lighting now that I see it in action. However, the principles can be used with whatever flash equipment you have or even with standard lights around the house.

We are supposed to know all this stuff and most of us have read about it in books, but actually seeing weddings, dancing, and so on being lighted has much more impact than diagrams in books.

I liked it and will watch much of it again. I also bought more Nikon equipment than I should after seeing it, which is just what Nikon wants. I don't know why they don't post all of the sections on line for free. They would sell a lot more stuff that way.

All in all, it was worth it.

This video started me on the path to better photography. I have been a photo enthusiast for many years, but simply watching this video, then embracing the Nikon CLS has taken my photography to a whole new level. Buy the book "Hot Shoe Diaries" to go along with this. Caution: the Nikon system is expensive, so if you don't want to risk catching the highly contagious (but very fun) "CLS bug" and spending a small fortune then don't bother buying this video.

By GoodQ
First off Joe is a marvelous man and a genius of the industry. I always enjoyed his work. I was a bit skeptic when I ordered this video since I didn't much like his books, but when I saw this video for the first time I was amazed.

This video contains not only how to use CLS but also how to take amazing breath taking pictures with the CLS system. (Which I own and love as well).

Joe shows in this video how much photography has changed from having to set strobes individually and working with light meters running around like rabbits while the sun is going down to the world of wireless photography and pocket wizards (pocket wizards are not in the video).

Shot angles and where to place the lights and usage of snoots and grids all there.

I really advise to seeing the video more than once and no less then 5 times. (I saw it maybe 2 dozen times now and I keep finding out more things).

This is a must for all Nikon users (and non Nikon users so they know what they are missing :) ).

Hope that helped.
