Nikon School presents A Hands-on Guide to Creative Lighting is very very important to learn how to use Nikon creative lighting system CLS). So what is CLS? It is automatic flash system that built-in your camera and some Nikon flashes. If you have Nikon D90 DX 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S VR DX Nikkor Zoom Lens or more advanced camera and Nikon Nikon SB-900 AF Speedlight Flash for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras, you can practice CLS right away.
The host of this DVD is Bob Krist and Joe McNally. The material are very well structured and articulated even for beginners. Learning about lighting involve a lot of technical issues in the past and might turned off many people from studying it, but Bob and Joe make it simpler and easier to understand. They take advantages of the wireless commander in the camera and Speedlite and use automatic adjustment (TTL) to adjust the light. So thanks God, minimal amount of math is used here.
Bob discusses about standard studio portrait in the beginning of the DVD and then introduces Joe later. Then, they worked in the various fields showcasing multiple ways you can do with the system. They do wedding portrait, vacation portrait, environmental portrait, and dance. It starts with a very simple one light photography and then it expands up to 11-12 strobes. Highly recommended for enthusiasts and it is absolutely must get for aspiring professionals.

This DVD quickly progresses from a single flash unit to multiple flashes, more than you or I will ever own or want to own, like 13 units!. However, that is not as intimidating as it may sound because we can always substitute light sources we do have handy (lamps, spots, floods, even the little aluminum shade lights our dad had, etc) for some of the extra flashes. And using even three lights covers most of it.
The beginning stuff is a little tedious as it should be, but once they actually start using equipment, things are good. And when Joe McNally steps in, the pace can get faster than I can follow, and they don't always tell us things like which lens they are using until after a while, if ever.
Was it worth it? Yep, because seeing is believing and monkey-see, monkey-do is the name of the game. All I have to do is copy what they do and be as creative as I can with it all.
This DVD is really geared for the Nikon CLS (Creative Lighting System) of wireless remotes and a commander, which is a very cool and compact system of lighting now that I see it in action. However, the principles can be used with whatever flash equipment you have or even with standard lights around the house.
We are supposed to know all this stuff and most of us have read about it in books, but actually seeing weddings, dancing, and so on being lighted has much more impact than diagrams in books.
I liked it and will watch much of it again. I also bought more Nikon equipment than I should after seeing it, which is just what Nikon wants. I don't know why they don't post all of the sections on line for free. They would sell a lot more stuff that way.
All in all, it was worth it.

This video started me on the path to better photography. I have been a photo enthusiast for many years, but simply watching this video, then embracing the Nikon CLS has taken my photography to a whole new level. Buy the book "Hot Shoe Diaries" to go along with this. Caution: the Nikon system is expensive, so if you don't want to risk catching the highly contagious (but very fun) "CLS bug" and spending a small fortune then don't bother buying this video.

First off Joe is a marvelous man and a genius of the industry. I always enjoyed his work. I was a bit skeptic when I ordered this video since I didn't much like his books, but when I saw this video for the first time I was amazed.
This video contains not only how to use CLS but also how to take amazing breath taking pictures with the CLS system. (Which I own and love as well).
Joe shows in this video how much photography has changed from having to set strobes individually and working with light meters running around like rabbits while the sun is going down to the world of wireless photography and pocket wizards (pocket wizards are not in the video).
Shot angles and where to place the lights and usage of snoots and grids all there.
I really advise to seeing the video more than once and no less then 5 times. (I saw it maybe 2 dozen times now and I keep finding out more things).
This is a must for all Nikon users (and non Nikon users so they know what they are missing :) ).
