First, let's focus on the most important. The flash has a lot of features, but nothing, let me repeat, nothing is more important than the raw power it can produce. If you were to ask a single question about a flash - ask about the guide number. The higher it is, the more options you have. You can reach objects far away, can bounce flash off the walls, put some filters - a lot of things you just can't do at all if your flash is not powerful enough. So if you look at the Nikon line, the SB-900 has this advantage.



Second, if you look that the DSLR bodies, there is a lot of progress there and in a couple years you can get a much better body for the same price. The lenses and flashes on the other side are not changing that much and hold value over many years. So if you have a choice it's a good idea to get the best lense and flash you can afford so they can last forever and upgrade the cheaper bodies time to time.



So these are two big reasons to buy SB-900.



Now let's think why would you not buy this flash.



If you read the reviews below, there is a lot of arguing about which batteries to use and the thermal shut off. You know, yes, they all have their points but in most of the real life situations all those concerns a way beyond reasonable.



What else is not good about this flash? Well, the noise. If you have a zoom lense, every time you zoom in or out, the flash will adjust the mirrors to provide good coverage and that's causing some noise. It's ok outdoors or at a party, but if you try to take pictures at a concert, that could be distracting. (Yes, you can lock the mirrors in a wide position and give plenty of raw power you should get by without moving those mirrors in most case)



Well, the menu and the controls could be easier to operate but that's not a deal breaker. And, of course, the price. It's quite expensive.



So overall, this is really an amazing flash. Because it's so powerful, it can light up a huge areas or using filters or bouncing it can create some very nice lighting effects which you just can't do with a smaller flash, so if you can afford it - it's not a bad flash at all.

The only real con of this flash is it's sheer size, as it occupies what used to be two lens pockets in my Kata camera bag. The flexibility to use as a bounce flash and the overall operation of the flash is wonderful.



A diffusion dome, some colored filters/holder, a fabric case, and a flash base (for use when the flash is not directly mounted on the hot shoe) are all included.

I've been using my new SB-900 with a Nikon D3S and have great results. I previously used an SB-800 and liked that unit very much. I had not heard anything about the thermal cutoff until reading a couple of reviews on Amazon, so I gave my unit a test. I could not duplicate any cutoff problem. I use it as delivered and did not turn off any thermal protection. I fired it multiple times and it recycled very quickly and never hesitated. The recycle time is faster than my SB-800 with the extra battery add-on.

Great flash, and my second entry into the Nikon CLS system.



I needed something to work wirelessly with my D200 using the commander mode (remember to also purchase the Nikon SG-31R IR Panel for Built-in Flash Repl - Nikon 4905 to mount over your built in flash so you can wirelessly trigger the remote flash), something with a bit reach, and FAST recharge time.



For a naive user, the SB900's menus are a GOD sent - easy, quick, intuitive, the way it should've been.



There is some buzz on the web that early adopters had flashes that overheated and would shut down during events. . .how to combat the problem? Use Sanyo Eneloop 4 Pack AA NiMH Pre-Charged Rechargable Batteries w/ Charger, or get the battery pack for the SB900, which attaches with a wire and reduces recharge time and disperses heat better.



I personally have never had a problem with my SB900 recycling fast and overheating.



Looking forward to Nikon updating the SB600 with this user interface!

This is a very well constructed flash unit, easy to use, affordable, compact and light, I would rate this higher but it lacked a few features, but you should evaluate first what your using it for before you purchase it, if you need or use multiple flash units, need a fast recycle time, or going to use a remote this is not for you, This works for the occasional indoor shooter, It functions very well with my D200 and a 70-200 VR, In fact when I tested this unit, I said to myself if it does not function with this particular lens I would move on to the SB 6,8 or 900, but to my surprise it worked better then I had expected! If you over read this review or have any doubts then just move on up to the SB 600 or higher, you won't go wrong with any of them.

I purchased this external flash unit to use with my Nikon D5000. The main reason I wanted an external flash was so I could angle the flash to the ceiling and bounce the light. This unit works great. It is lightweight, recycles quickly, and provides enough light to work well in most indoor settings. I have also used it outdoors as a fill flash and it really helps there as well. All in all, I am very pleased with it. The only negative that I have encountered is that if you rotate your camera into a portait mode then your only option for bouncing the flash is off a side wall instead of the ceiling.

I have just finished taking about two hundred Thanksgiving pictures with my new SB400 and Sto-Fen Omni-Bounce (the two should be bought together). The difference, when compared to pictures taken with the in-camera (D-90) flash, are very positive and very substantial. With the in-camera flash, the lighing was harsh and uneven while with the SB400 and Sto-Fen Omni-Bounce, the lighting was gentle, even, and enveloping. I wish I had purchased this attachment earlier. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to improve the quality of their flah photography.

I have a Nikon D60, and its little built-in flash can't quite keep up with the photography I do (shooting in dark hotel lobbies, homes, et cetera). What a difference this SB-600 flash makes!



The AF grid that the flash projects (IR, so it's not visible) really helps my camera focus in lower light conditions. It still has trouble with some things, like mascot costume faces (where is the face? confused!), but it's still an improvement over not using the SB-600.



I may want to get the SB-800 at some point, but I'm happy for now!

I bought this lens few days ago and have been using it on my D90 with Tamron 18-270 and Nikon 18-200 lens. The bounce flash off ceiling is so much better and natural looking than using the flash on the camera! I'm impressed. I bought it with Amazon's excellent return policy to give it a test run. I'm definitely keeping it. I also like that we can use AA batteries if needed in an emergency. I'm running them off eneloops right now. I took some great portraits of my daughter bouncing the flash off the ceiling and I'm impressed! I never knew before a friend of mine recommended this to go with my new D90 that an external flash will do so much difference. Sometimes it is true that you get what you pay for and in this case very well worth it. :-)

I had 2 SB800s. One was stolen and I didn't want to buy the SB900, since it is huge and expensive and I mainly only used one flash, so the other would be back-up. I figured after reading some reviews to get this little guy instead.

Upon arrival I was pleasantly surprised on how efficient and light it is. The power output is better than I thought and it works just as well as the SB800 in almost every respect. I shot a wedding with it after purchase and the photos came out great!

I bought this to go with my Nikon D40 to learn more with flash photography. I was considering the sb-400 first but I though about the difference in price and what the actual difference in result would be. I am glad I spend the money on this over the smaller one. Being able to control the light power in the steps it does gives good control over.It gives great light for indoor party photos and out doors for off camera flash. It is not too heavy on a D40. If you have a 55-200mm vr lens, it is balanced nice.



The NIKON D40 flash will not trigger this!! You need an optical slave or a remote unit or a ttl cable for remote triggering.



It is easy to use straight out of the box. Put in your batteries, turn it on and attach to the camera and you are ready to go. Then you can read the manual and find out about the custom settings that you can use. So far, it seems to be ok on batteries. I managed to take about 400 photos while messing around with it and there was no sign of a low battery light.



I left it for a few days though and came back, turned it on and it was making funny noises. I recharged the batteries and it was back to normal, so it was a power issue.



I bought a set of remote triggers also to use with this for off camera flash and it is a great set up for the price. If you are thinking about the sb-800, I would consider saving the money and getting one of these instead, unless you need the extras.



I cant say anything bad about it yet, but then again I am not that experienced. Some gels and a white card would be nice if they came with it though.
