I got this camera for Christmas, so I've been using it for 2+ weeks. Yes, the projector is very cool. And the wideness of the lens is great. The flash recharges fairly quickly. But the photos I've taken with it aren't as sharp as those from the Casio Exilim camera I got 3 years ago. And at the end of the day for me, sharp photos are more important than bells and whistles. Also, the lens is in the upper right corner of the camera instead of dead center which is where the projector is (a strange design choice), so you have to be careful how you hold it so you don't get the edge of your finger in the image. The flash is very bright, so you can't be too close to your subject when using it -- it washes out the image. And because the lens is so wide, I did find myself getting closer to my subjects. So unless you have some urgent need for the projector feature, I can't recommend this camera, especially given how expensive it is. I've gone back to using my Casio camera...which is also lighter and easier to stick in my pocket.

I purchased this item for my husband for Christmas. He totally loved it! The instructions were easy for him to follow. In less than 24 hours he felt completely at ease with using this camera. The pictures are great. Everyone loved the projector feature!! He spent his holiday season taking pictures of everyone and then displaying them on the wall. The projector pictures looked as good as the photo pictures. I am not sure how a professional photographer would review this product. I am sure we will enjoy taking (and showing) lots of family pictures for years to come!

I got this camera for a birthday present last week and love it. All the adjustments are so easy, I wanted a portable to compare with my D40 and this fits the bill, plus it is so cool! I love he touch screen, I think the negative reviews it is getting are from people who don't learn how to use it. The only thing I would change is to make the charger smaller, it is kinda bulky to lug around with you, I guess I will be getting a spare battery.

This camera has everything. Every option the novice would ever need...ISO adjustment, black & white option, high mega-pixel, touch screen, etc. I was willing to pay more for the touch screen and it did not disappoint. After becoming quit comfortable with my ipod-touch...this touch screen was a welcome new toy. I read all the reviews and most had the same theme...fun camera, loved the touch-screen but didn't take quality pictures. I threw caution into the wind and ignored the negative. I was in love with this touch screen idea. Anyway, after playing around for a while I found option after option including the ability to crop your photos right there on the camera...how great is that? I could even turn a regular photo to black & white with the push of a button. So what's the problem you ask? ...and why the negative review?



Plain & simple the reviews were dead on...CAMERA DOESN'T TAKE GOOD PICTURES. I should add that it did take some clear pictures but if I had to assign a percentage I would say 80% of the picture were blurry. I read every review on how to adjust the ISO & everything else. I even took it to my buddy the camera tech geek. He had no luck in getting consistent quality pictures either. He said the camera was just "too gimicky." I took the camera out New Years Eve and out of the 20 or 30 pics we took...only 3 were good quality (very dissapointing). So while I loved the camera for it's options, size & touch-screen...it just didn't take consistent quality pictures.



I have since returned the camera and purchased a Cannon elph (dont remember the exact name or model). All I want is a small portable camera that takes reasonably good quality pictures. I don't know much about camera's at all and don't really want too...just want to shoot & view, print and most importantly capture memories. This new Cannon was cheaper and out of the box took great quality pictures...probably 90%-95% of my pics are crystal clear and I didn't have to do a thing...just point and click. I strongly recommend waiting until Nikon fixes the picture quality before buying. Hope this helps.

I was trying to decide between purchasing the D700 and the Canon 5D MkII. I liked the prospect of the significantly lower prices of the Canon lenses and slightly higher MP count of the 5D. But those differences don't necessarily lead to better pics. Well, I went with the Nikon and am simply amazed. I purchased the Nikon 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6G ED IF Autofocus VR Nikkor Zoom Lens, the Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Nikkor Wide Angle Zoom Lens, the Nikon 50mm f/1.4G SIC SW Prime Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras, the Nikon 105mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor Lens, the Nikon SB-900 AF Speedlight Flash for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras, and a pair of Lexar Professional Series UDMA 16 GB 300x CompactFlash Memory Card CF16GB-300-381 to go along with a couple of lenses I already had from a previous Nikon N8008. I used this camera on my family's Disney vacation during the week of Christmas to Jan 3. Photographing Disney at night was simply stunning with the D700. This is not to mention the incredible daylight photos it produces. The menus are very easy to navigate and setup your custom settings for different subject and lighting conditions. I was very tired of the poor results from the point-and-shoot cameras so I decided to take the plunge into real photography again. I've found a new hobby! One item that never ceases to amaze me is the auto focus ability of the D700. It just ALWAYS gets the subject in focus. I can't explain it any different than that. Even during low light conditions (night time) it's spot on. I had a great time taking night shots at Epcot. The results were awesome. The camera is a little heavy for a walkabout camera, but the results more than make up for the slight inconvenience it is.

Over the last 50 plus years I have owned and used a box Brownie, a Kodak 120 folding camera, a Graflex, three Leicas (2 of which were IIIgs), a Canon AE-1, a Nikon N70, a Nikon N80, a Nikon D100, and a Nikon D200. This is the first camera I have really liked since the Leica IIIg. I have been using it with the 24-70mm f2.8 lens and the picture quality is excellent.



Other reviews will give you more details and comparisons. I will simply say that this is the first camera since the Leica IIg that puts all the controls that I actually use at my fingertips. Combining that with the bright, clear, viewfinder I feel comfortable with the camera and can concentrate on composing the photograph.



The only shortcoming that I have noticed is that occasionally photos seem overexposed by half a stop. That is a subjective impression and since I always do a lot of post processing it does not matter much. I have not conducted exhaustive tests but the tendency to overexpose seems to disappear if I shift from matrix metering to center weighted metering.



I doubt that I will ever upgrade this body. Instead I will invest in lenses.

As a former f100 owner, I have strange feelings of deja-vu holding this camera and looking through it.



And then I realize how far things have come in the past 9 years.



This camera is what many have been waiting for. And it's about damn time!



Size? Check. Speed? Grab a grip and double check. Ease of use? Check. Compatibility with crazy old lenses? Check. Built in flash that commands useful multi light flash system that works in TTL? Check. Resolution for good 20x30's? Check. Insanely high ISO that looks better than film at 1600? Check. (?!) 51 point AF with tracking across all the points? Check (?!) Same price as a new F5 in 2000? Check (?!)



I can almost hear Phil Collins...because I've been waiting for this camera, for all my life.



Ok, but in all seriousness, this camera can do it all. If it can't, it's YOUR shortcoming as a photographer.



Of course it doesn't do video. Who cares?

I started with the Nikon D50 went to D80 D300, and wanted to move to full frame but the D3 was just to expensive for me. Once the D700 came out I was trilled to find it very similar to the D3, I order one immediately and it was the best decision ever.



I work as a wedding photographer and love full frame. I used the Canon 5D and 5D Mark II and was surprised how slow in terms of operation they where in comparison to the D700. When moment are happening I need a camera that reacts as fast as I do and I'm happy Nikon made it.



Amazing Low light, speed, easy of use, and now in a smaller package. What more can you ask for.

Full frame (FX) in a DX-size body. As easy to use as a D300 and really excellent image quality, especially in dim light. Very good for street photography when you prefer to keep a low profile. High ISO shooting without the noise of a DX sensor is the main reason that I purchased this camera body. I have a D3s body for REALLY low light/High ISO, but you aren't going to EVER be inconspicuous with a D3. This camera is virtually the same size as my D300s and even shares the MB-10 grip. Excellent. I have to look/touch closely to tell which body I have in the dark.

I bought the D40 kit a little more than one year ago. In a nutshell, I couldn't ask for anything more in a DSLR for newbs. It's got everything I need to learn the ins and outs of photography, it's very well built (and yes, even the kit lens), it's portable and dangit, it's extremely affordable to boot! It's been 100% reliable since day one, and it has become indisputable proof that the only difference between a great picture and a crap picture, is the photographer - not the equipment.



If I ever decide to upgrade to something higher up the food chain, chances are it'll be a Nikon.

I purchased this camera a year and a half ago and have had to send it back twice so far. IT seems to go out right before a special occasion so I have no pictures. I thought I was buying a good quality camera to record all the moments of my child growing up. The first time I had to send it to Nikon, the flash would not deploy, now it will not focus the majority of the time. I took over 30 pictures maybe 1 or 2 were in focus ( I thought automatic meant it would handle everything if I didn't want to be bothered). I am waiting to see how much Nikon will charge me to fix it this time but I am done with Nikon. I did a lot of research and thought I was purchasing a quality product but that is not the case, stay away from this if you want to catch those special moments because that is when it mostly likely will go out on you. i am starting the search again to see which one I will buy now. Hope I don't miss my son's birthday again.

This was my first DSLR and I bought it 6 months before first child was born. I cannot take a bad picture with this thing. Pair with the cheap SB-400 flash and you'll be taking professional pictures in any light with little effort. The fact that people still drop several hundred dollars on the virtually "disposable" "cute colored" point and shoots when a camera like this is just a couple hundred more is beyond me. Buy it, buy it now.

This camera was my first venture into the DSLR world. I had been shooting with my trusty Canon point and shoot for years and although I got great quality photos, I was often frustrated with the lag time of a point and shoot.



I bought the Nikon D40 in February of 2008. The price has not changed much since and for good reason. This camera is very inexpensive for what it offers, with pricing only slightly higher than some higher end point and shoots.



Before I begin, You will notice in my reviews I do not go into the full specs of the camera. I feel as a consumer if I want to read that, I can read it here on Amazon in the information or I can download the manual from the manufacturer. So I do not include that. In my reviews I include my personal observations only.



The Good-



~ Turn on time is nearly instant. No more waiting for the camera to boot up and losing that precious shot



~ Even in high quality mode there is nearly no lag between pushing the button and the shutter firing. You get the shot you are going for every time.



~ I always forget to shut it off, It powers down itself after a bit to save battery.



~ Has all the capabilities of higher end cameras, yet an easy to use interface with an Auto mode. A great camera for someone who is interested in photography or someone who just likes to put it on Auto and edit with Photoshop later.



~ Action shots. You can take rapid fire pictures with this camera that come out perfect. I recently took photos through a chain link fence of my son's baseball game and got 8 shots from him leaving 3rd base to sliding into home plate that are priceless. TIP: Your speed relies on your memory card. Use cards with "ultra" or "premium" speed ratings for maximum speed. This is true whether you use a DSLR or a point and shoot from Walmart.



~ Lenses. There is a lens for every need. Macro, Wide angle, Zoom to the moon. If you want it Nikon has it and Nikkor lenses are top of the line. At the end of the day a camera is only as good as it's lens and I really beleive Nikon lenses beat the competition hands down.



~ Manual zoom/focus. I love this. Most newer nikkor lenses have auto focus capabilities if the thought of focusing on your own is intimidating but I love having the ultimate control over my focus and I find that I'm faster at zooming and focusing than the auto feature on the camera is a lot of the time so I tend to just keep it on manual. This camera does not have an automatic zoom and I assure you, you will not miss it.





The Bad-



~ Size. It really is a pain to carry this thing around a fair or while chasing children around. It's big, and that uber expensive lens juts out just asking to be knocked off a wall. The neck strap is quit uncomfortable. This has been my biggest pet peeve with this camera and the reason I recently purchased another point and shoot for every day and will leave my Nikon sitting at home except for photo shoots and high action activities.



~ Framing. You cannot frame your shot with the LCD screen with this camera. Nikon finally added that feature on the D90. At first this made me crazy, what with having been a Canon point and shoot girl for years. And to be honest this is still slightly annoying. I have talked to other photographers who don't miss it but for me, when I'm shooting my kids' lives I'd like to be a part of it too, not with my face stuck in a viewfinder. I just feel detached when I have to look through a viewfinder.



~ Video. Nikon dropped the ball on this one. The Nikon D40 is capable of recording video but does not have audio capabilities.



~ Flash- The flash on the D40 is very powerful allowing you to take great night shots. It does tend to be a bit much in dim conditions and causes a bit of washout. My biggest pet peeve with the flash is that it's so low profile I usually end up blocking it with my finger. I shoot quickly, zooming/focusing and clicking and if I don't remember to take my hand off after I zoom/focus I'll block the flash. It's annoying and I've lost some great shots that way.





All in all if you want to move up to a DSLR go for the D40 in lieu of some of it's more pricey competitors. It is versatile and high quality enough for the professional photographer, yet inexpensive and easy enough to use for those who just chase the kids around the playground. Due to it's less than ideal portability this camera likely will not replace your trusty point and shoot, but it will be a great addition to your memory preserving arsenal.

Short, sweet and to the point! I LOVE my new Nikon! As an early wedding, Christmas, birthday present to myself, I bought the Nikon P90! Okay, so really I told people that it was "saved" in my shopping cart and when I was buying a lightning deal, I just checked out with the camera too! (shhh..don't tell anyone!)

I like my camera's simple and easy to use with sharp images. I got exactly that! Excellent! My first shot out of the box was crystal clear! No adjustments, no settings - I did NOTHING but point and shoot! Wow - it was sooooooooo clear! I will post that picture for you all to see!

My only regret? I didn't buy it sooner!

Picture and stabliztion is good overall a very good camera. However, I brought this camera for the camera as well as for the quick video feature and the video quality was not very good and the zoom feature did not work for the video like for pictures. I thought because the pixels were higher for pictures the videos well also be better but I was very disappointed by the video quality. I am thinking now I have to buy a camcorder for the better video.

I'm used to using Nikon's full-sized D-SLRs with vertical grips and the wonderful Nikon VR lenses. I love them dearly and will always use them as my cameras of choice.



I had purchased a Coolpix 8800 a few years ago and gave it mediocre reviews. It is much larger, again, with the vertical grip, but it is rugged and works well, although it has a relatively small file-size, dimmer eye-level viewer and smaller screen. It allows me lots of versatility, but I wanted something smaller, with larger file-sizes.



The P90 offers that, far better movie choices and many more options for shooting right out of my purse. This is a camera that can give me professional quality and versatility in non-flash situations that are unmatched by other grab cameras without the bulk of my professional systems.



The lack of range of f-stops loses versatility in important areas. It has no hot shoe, so it can only be gerry-rigged for complex flash situations. I really don't plan to use it on that level. It uses 4-1 compressed JPEG images, which take the quality down a bit and has no option for RAW images or uncompressed TIFFs. The zoom seems jumpy, but that may just be a situation where I need practice.



At extreme optical and digital zoom, combined with the best VR system I have used, it produce some very nice results hand-held. I can hardly wait for my next encounter with the red tail hawk in the marsh next to my home! It's also nice to have an actual wide-angle option.



One of the main reasons I purchased this unit is that I love Arches and Canyonlands NPs and last year when I was there, in the high desert, the winds howeled! The downside of that was dust on the sensors in my D-SLRs, even the self-cleaning D90 and DX300. There is no worse feeling than getting back to a motel, uploading hundreds of photos, and finding that you have to retouch virtually every one. Welcome back to film! With a sealed system,I can wander all over and not worry about dust!



So far, I've only had the camera a few days, I haven't taken any spectacular shots to share. I still haven't taken anything I would want at 20X30, so I'll reserve judgement on compressed JPEGs. They may be better than I expect. I found that I love the "food" scene mode! It has a color temperature adjustment right on-screen. Since this will be an available light camera (I despise on-camera flash), this will be a useful mode.



I will probably update this report after I've done some meaningful shooting. A 4gig SD card holds almost 650 shots, so quality is going to be a big issue. The battery has a limited life, so I will be purchasing extras. I just have to remember it's a backup! If it's a good one for me, it will be the best camera the average amateur will ever own, and that is not ego talking. I am just uber-picky...

Nikon's P90 Hybrid Point And Shoot



My turn to weigh in on this camera! First, I was pretty surprised at the mixed reviews, most of which I read after ordering my P90. Even the negative posts didn't scare me though, as I have owned a Coolpix 5700, another "hybrid PNS", for about six years and have had nothing but great luck with it. (Many thousands of photos later, I still love it.) And, hats off to Nikon ... five years into my 5700, it came up lame and Nikon USA fixed it and had it back to me in a week at no charge.



To be fair, I AM a user's guide reader, which is one thing everyone should be doing with a tool that offers so many features. Once you've been through a few manuals, it gets easier to understand. Trust me; your manual is your friend.



The accusation that the P90 takes terrible pictures is absolutely absurd. Incompetent photographers take terrible pictures. The camera is perfectly capable of taking excellent quality pictures that will be satisfying to all but true professionals. There are reasons that those National Geographic shots are so impressive ... starting with the fact that few of those photographers are using a three hundred dollar point and shoot for the brunt of their work, and ending with the fact that those people behind the lens are far more trained in photography than the average person, or me for that matter. (And remember, we see the best of their work.)



Getting on with the P90, I am perfectly smitten. The monster LCD screen is just terrific, but it still has a conventional viewfinder with a diopter adjustment. You can switch between the two in an instant with one button. It's a wonderful camera that has so much control at the fingertips, and can be adjusted so quickly, there really isn't any reason, aside from user error, that great results can't be achieved. White balance, exposure compensation, metering, ISO and shooting mode setting are all of general note here, and they are all quick and easy to get to via the menus or the mode dial. And then, a reality check is in order.



White balance used to be corrected with filters on conventional cameras, but now it is done digitally. When you scroll to the white balance menu on the P90 and make a change, feedback is visually immediate on the screen if applicable. For instance, setting it to incandescent will get rid of the orange hue of indoor lights. You should adjust for white balance depending on your shooting situation and think of it each time you shoot.



Exposure compensation is available on the multi-selector with just one push of the button. As you then adjust the exposure by click, again, you see the change on the screen. Although you can also use an auto bracketing feature, I really like this feature when I see the first shot on screen and want to decrease or increase exposure fast and easy.



Four types of metering are available. I happen to like the spot meter for most shooting. One trick (useful with all digital cameras that offer metering) is to meter various things in the shot. You will see the exposure change before your eyes. Metering something dark will lighten the shot or, the reverse, metering something light will darken the shot. For instance, I have two black dogs with white paws and briskets. If I meter their faces directly the shots are always overexposed. I often meter the white brisket by pushing the shutter release button half down and then recompose the shot to take the picture. You can do this in all kinds of shooting situations, provided your subject remains in focus.



As in film photography, the most useful ISO speeds are probably 64 through 400. Expect shots at 800 and 1600 to be digitally noisy, just as they would be grainy in film. Again, the P90 allows for almost instant changing of ISO settings, something you couldn't do with film.



As for shooting modes, all the standard modes (aperture and shutter priority as well as program auto) are available on the mode dial, including full manual, and lots of other bells and whistles. A good many people will treat the P90 like a pocket camera and just go full auto, which is fine. That will yield many good results. However, for those who are more inclined to an artistic eye or more control, the camera is feature rich enough to offer almost limitless possibilities. And, that is the reason to digest the manual fully. Remember, it's digital, so you can delete failed shots (and just imagine the waste and money if it was film and prints).



Listen, there are a hundred other added values on the various menus. Voice recording, time lapse movies, continuous shooting at 15 frames per second ... blah, blah, blah. I won't even go there. Suffice it to say that it's a lot of value for fewer than three hundred bucks.



Now, let's address the reality check. Much of the hype about the 24X zoom is just that, hype. Few shots can be terrific at full length on a zoom of this quality, so don't count on using it for bald eagles a quarter mile away, let alone off tripod. As stated above, don't hope for magazine quality shots at ISO 1600, it just can't happen. The built-in flash is standard fare. Straight-on flash can be flat and unflattering in portraiture on any camera. It's also easy to wash out a shot ... so expect to bracket if the shot is important to you.



Some have stated that the camera feels cheap because it is so light weight. I actually love that it is light and easy on the neck. Personally, I don't think it looks or feels "cheap" at all.



Finally, I do have a few minor complaints. I cannot for the life of me understand why Nikon won't thread these cameras for filters. Sure, most filtering is digital these days, but I would kill sometimes for a polarizing filter and would very much have liked to keep a UV filter on the camera for lens protection, just as I always did on my old conventional cameras. Further, I hate rechargeable batteries. I so wish that they would have gone with AA or AAA batteries which you can always find anywhere.



Having stated that, I am giving the P90 five stars, because it's been an amazing, wonderful camera for me, and it's taking some killer good pictures, especially since I took the time to understand its potential. Repeat after me ... "the manual is my friend".

After spending hours researcing the P90 here and on other sites,I was concerned as to my purchase.I made my purchase, on line on 27 November.My P90 was delivered today@ 9AM.I have joyfully spent the last fifteen (15) hours, with my professional photogropher neighbor using this camera.



The ease of use and picture quality in auto and manual modes are just terrific.



I just captured a few stellar shots of the full moon minutes ago.



If one is conidering the purchase of a P&S,give the P90 a second look.I'M confident this one is a keeper.Way to go Nikon.
