I'm a semi-professional photographer who's been using Nikon cameras and products for several years with zero complaints. I purchased this camera to have something more portable for snapshots of friends and family. My faith in Nikon was misplaced and I've found myself sorely wishing that I had gone to a brick and mortar store to test-drive a few small cameras. I admit that it's quite possible that I'm jaded and spoiled after having shot with a D200 and D700 for years, but the picture quality of this camera is incredibly dismal, the build quality is so-so, and the speed of operation is also incredibly disappointing.



If you like to use a flash a lot and aren't really concerned about the quality of your pictures, this camera might be acceptable to you. But if you are somewhat technically savvy when it comes to cameras, you should be aware that the 12 megapixels and ISO 6400 capability do NOT translate into even marginally acceptable picture quality. The sensor in this camera is really from the bottom of the barrel, and after having used it for awhile, I was very disheartened to discover that my iphone actually takes better quality pictures than this camera. Additionally, start-up is surprisingly slow, auto-focus is only quick in really bright light and I've had a few problems transferring files from the camera to my computer (issues with both speed and glitches).



On the bright side, the video quality, although limited by the poor sensor quality is not half-bad. Although I have occasionally had issues with the sound quality (choppy sound sometimes occurs when recording movies).



My advice is to shop around before purchasing this camera. I paid $200 for mine two months ago, and in spite of trying to like and use the camera, I've regretted it ever since.

I picked up the Nikon S640 as a throw away camera that I would carry everywhere especially where my DSLR is too bulky/heavy and I am not on a photo job assignment. My philosophy regarding cameras is located here and I will not repeat it (at [...] and select "equipment" from the home page). I will start with my negative points. 1) it is not an indoor sports camera 2)It does not have a manual override; however, the scenes can be selected with an eye towards min depth of field (portate mode) sports for fastest shutter etc. 3) no ability to create raw files. It was a challenge to take an indoor photo without flash at 1600 ASA with a decent shutter speed but it can be done. The time between image capture and operator view of the image is in multiple seconds and seems long.

Positive points - 1) nice form factor, light and small, 2) relatively quick to startup (less than 2 sec) to shoot if in automatic mode, reasonable quality (see gallery of unretouched photos at the [...] equipment selection and then the "here" hot word under point and shoot discriminators). Would I shoot a wedding with it? No; however, I most likely I will take it to dinner tonight when we meet a cousin for the first time.

I have used it extensively to record the snow for the past week. Images are very good and can be printed on 17 inch paper so I am extremely pleased with this camera. The main camera that is used for a wide range of subjects is my Nikon D70 that I have been using since 2003. The Nikon Coolpix 640 turned out to be my constant companion with a cord attaching around my neck and the camera inserted in my shirt pocket. It can be wide angle for street photography and has a very easy zoom feature adjustment at the shutter release button. It is possible to go to close-up format instantly as well as time-release, flash settings and exposure compensation. Scene modes, white balance and other menu change are instant with a little practice. The overall quality of the photographed images are comparable to my D70.

I purchased this camera through Amazon about a month ago, in anticipation of an upcoming cruise to the Caribbean.



My goals when buying this camera were pretty straightforward.

1) Good picture quality.

2) Very portable. Something to fit in jeans / short pockets.

3) Fast interface and quick to snap photos.

4) Limited motion blur. Basically image and camera stabilization.



After packing this camera around everywhere I went for 10 days straight, and using it religiously over the course of the past 4 weeks, I must say I am very happy with the results. My pictures from the Caribbean turned out spectacular, as have all the others in between. So here is the breakdown.



1) Picture quality is great. It does a pretty good job on the auto settings, but it isn't terribly hard to manipulate your shot in manual mode as well, if you're into that.

2) For 10 days straight I packed the camera around in jeans pockets and board shorts. It is light and easy to carry, fits just fine, and isn't a pain.

3) The interface is incredibly fast! It loads up super quick! It does take an extra second or two before all the features are fully loaded, but that was of no concern to me. Navigating the interface is a breeze. You're able to take photos pretty quickly, and with the adjustable ISO you can make it even faster if you so desire. To start it up, and snap a good quality photo in auto mode, might take 3 seconds or so. Very happy about that.

4) This thing is incredible when it comes to blur. I was so impressed I even did a series of tests with it. In auto mode it is easy enough to capture a car traveling 50mph+ with no blur, from a standstill. I took it in my car and on surface streets, traveling 30mph+, captured photos of the city with no blur and good colors. Taking photos from a tour bus on my trip turned out wonderful as well. Using it on my cruise from the tender boats was great. Despite traveling at a decent pace the shots never blurred, even when capturing fast moving settings like the boat wake or other boats.

Works decently in low light situations. Sometimes the auto mode isn't exact and you need to take a second photo, but it works well 99% of the time. I was very impressed by turning off the flash and letting auto mode adjust the ISO in low light situations - those pictures came out great! I played with the ISO in manual mode a fair bit as well, and you can do some fun stuff in low light. It isn't going to be a DSLR, but shoot, for what this camera is and what it costs, it does well.



Macro mode! It is killer on this camera. Extreme closeups come out nice and crisp.



Rechargeable battery. I know this is virtually standard these days, but just in case you didn't notice it. It's really handy.



I was able to purchase a high speed SD card for very cheap online (newegg), and expand my storage up to 8GB. This worked out well, and offloading pictures is nice and quick.



All in all, if you're in the market for a decent point and shoot, this just might be the camera for you. I shopped through a ton of cameras, and then narrowed it down to about 15 for detailed review. This one came out as the winner in my book, and I'm very satisfied with my purchase.



There are several other great cameras out there though, so do your research and read reviews, especially if you're after certain features. All I can do is share my experience with this particular camera, and in this case, it was outstanding. So I hope that helps in some regard.

I just recently purchased the D5000 and have had this camera for over two months. I've been searching for a digital SLR to replace my SLR (Nikon N90) and fill the gap from my point and shoot (Canon IS970). I have been doing photography as an amateur for 20 some years now and have to say that the D5000 fills what I need perfectly. I was a bit perturbed about the reports in this forum about the problem with the Nikon and further still about support from Nikon in reporting the problem. In the past I have not had any problems with Nikon products (maybe lucky?) and they have had great support from their dealers for any questions that I had. If you have a problem with a Nikon product, you have a wealth of choices in terms of support - you can go to a local Ritz or Penn Camera in the Mid-Atlantic if you are not satisfied otherwise. There are a couple of things I was surprised about:



1) While I can use my older Nikon Lenses, they no longer work in AF. You need the new lenses that support the new style of DSLR AF.

2) You cannot use the older Flashes - it flashes too strongly for the CCDs/CMOSes and are not compatible with the new mounts. You will need to buy one specifically for these DSLRs.



Either of the above is not a problem since purchases should be forward compatible from here on out...



My buying thought process was the following:

1) Quality pictures

2) Quality build and company support

3) Compatible with old lenses (to save money)

4) Ease of use



#1 was readily solved. This camera is excellent in picture quality - I've been very satisfied with the pictures from high to low ISO with some understandable graininess at 3400 ISO. The CMOS sensor used in the D5000 is the same one as in the D90. Also, the 11 AF points are the same as the D90 and not the 3 point in the D60... The build is excellent. It is smaller than the D90, about as light as the D60, and feels solid. The past issue with the lockup is long done, I think. I've taken about 2000 pictures so far and no lockups and on a single battery with the builtin flash (but not continuous - probably about 20% with flash). I had a bunch of old lenses from my N90 that I really wanted to save money with. I can still use them but not with autofocus. I went ahead and bought new lenses anyway except for my 75-300mm Tamron Zoom lens. It's just a great form factor for that lens (light and small with a minimum barrel length of 2.5inches). The camera is also incredibly easy to use - it reminds me of how easy my N50 was. The learning curve on the N90 was a little steep which I suspect the D90 is as well. I can use the D5000 as easily as I can use the Canon IS970, which I think says a lot - and without having to use the manual. For getting the right depth of field using Aperture priority, I did need to look that up in the manual...



I think the D90 is a great camera and there are more features to it than on the D5000, but the D5000 hit the right spot in what I needed - a really good DSLR that is easy to use, light, and give me enough options to take some serious photography when I want to.



So 1,2,and 4 outweighed 3 - I could live with 3 since the only thing I lost was AF. Buy this camera and rememeber to buy a decent flash - if you are a beginner, you will run into the lens barrel shadow that all SLRs/DSLRs have with anything beyond an 18-50mm lens...

 "Nikon D5000 D-SLR body" 2010-01-23

I bought it in Dec 2009 at Best Buy as a "kit" with 2 lens & camera bag (which was good quality; however, I found this bag could not hold enough when I added a separate flash: SB-600).

The 12.3 MP gives good quality. The built in flash always pops up in Auto mode; however, there is a way to turn it off (the Mode dial should be set to the "lightning bolt" icon with a slash through it).

I have only used the AF-S 18-55 mm lens and have taken over a thousand photos at this setting: family, Christmas decorating and Christmas Eve family gift exchange, New Years party, & grandchildren. All the photos have been good: clear detail and enlargable. I shoot at the full 12.3 MP setting (large). This allows for cropping with no grainy appearance.

This was a much camera as I could afford, costing about $700 in the "Kit". I wanted the Nikon D700, but could not afford it ($3,000 body only); however, the lenses and flash would work with the D700 when I am able to afford it. Avoid the D300 (poor photo quality according to reviews).

The D5000 uses SD cards & I use an 8 GB one. Some grandkid motion is too fast for the auto-focus to follow; but with my previous Minolta DiImage A2 (long obsolete) could not catch that motion either.

When my Minolta died, I tried some other D-SLRs: Kodak Z980, Canon PowerShot SX20 and SX120. None compare to the D5000 (but they are less expensive).

I've had my D5000 for about a month. I'm upgrading from film SLRs and compact digitals. This is a whole new world. It looks like Nikon has done a good job of including features from their higher-end cameras (like the sensor, that being the whole point). It's taken me a little time to get used to all the features and settings and to get them where I want them. I'm about ready to take it out on the road and see what it's like to shoot pictures in the real world. I can't wait.

I did a lot of research before I decided to go with D5000 - including going to BestBuy and other camera stores and handling the camera to make sure it feels right. In the end I got the best deal through Amazon (even though a D5000 kit at Costco had an unbelievable deal). I choose not to buy a kit because I wanted specific lenses with the camera. I wanted one lens that I can travel with without the need to change lenses and another that I can use primarily in doors in low light conditions. I got the Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM IF Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras and Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras lenses. I also got a Nikon SB-600 Speedlight Flash for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras and an Eye-Fi 4GB Pro SDHC Wireless Flash Memory Card EYE-FI-4PC to wirelessly upload pictures to my laptop (D5000 has built in support for Eye-Fi SDHC cards). Last week Eye-Fi came out with Eye-Fi 8GB Pro X2 SDHC Class 6 Wireless Flash Memory Card EYE-FI-8PC that has more features and almost the same price (bummer!). I also got UV filters for both lens to protect the expensive lens glass.



The cameras I compared before buying were, Nikon D90, D60, Canon Rebel iTL, xTi, etc.



I have used it for two weeks now with great results. Camera is very easy to use, I still have not looked through the manual and have been able to find advance setting easily. The auto-focus with both the lenses is very fast (faster if using the view-port than using LiveView). I still have not been able to find a camera case that I feel good with - that is compact enough to easily carry around and I can get my essential accessories in.



One big factor for me for selecting this camera was the swivel lens. Being a big guy, I run into scenarios where I do not have clear line of sight to the subject I am capturing and have always wanted the ability to move the camera higher or away from my body to take great shots and the swivel LCD does a great job at it. My tipod mount has not had any problem with restricting the swivel movement, but I have seen it at a store, where the tripod mount was huge and restricted the LCD movement.



Again - overall highly recommended camera.

I got this camera for Christmas, so I've been using it for 2+ weeks. Yes, the projector is very cool. And the wideness of the lens is great. The flash recharges fairly quickly. But the photos I've taken with it aren't as sharp as those from the Casio Exilim camera I got 3 years ago. And at the end of the day for me, sharp photos are more important than bells and whistles. Also, the lens is in the upper right corner of the camera instead of dead center which is where the projector is (a strange design choice), so you have to be careful how you hold it so you don't get the edge of your finger in the image. The flash is very bright, so you can't be too close to your subject when using it -- it washes out the image. And because the lens is so wide, I did find myself getting closer to my subjects. So unless you have some urgent need for the projector feature, I can't recommend this camera, especially given how expensive it is. I've gone back to using my Casio camera...which is also lighter and easier to stick in my pocket.

I purchased this item for my husband for Christmas. He totally loved it! The instructions were easy for him to follow. In less than 24 hours he felt completely at ease with using this camera. The pictures are great. Everyone loved the projector feature!! He spent his holiday season taking pictures of everyone and then displaying them on the wall. The projector pictures looked as good as the photo pictures. I am not sure how a professional photographer would review this product. I am sure we will enjoy taking (and showing) lots of family pictures for years to come!

I got this camera for a birthday present last week and love it. All the adjustments are so easy, I wanted a portable to compare with my D40 and this fits the bill, plus it is so cool! I love he touch screen, I think the negative reviews it is getting are from people who don't learn how to use it. The only thing I would change is to make the charger smaller, it is kinda bulky to lug around with you, I guess I will be getting a spare battery.

This camera has everything. Every option the novice would ever need...ISO adjustment, black & white option, high mega-pixel, touch screen, etc. I was willing to pay more for the touch screen and it did not disappoint. After becoming quit comfortable with my ipod-touch...this touch screen was a welcome new toy. I read all the reviews and most had the same theme...fun camera, loved the touch-screen but didn't take quality pictures. I threw caution into the wind and ignored the negative. I was in love with this touch screen idea. Anyway, after playing around for a while I found option after option including the ability to crop your photos right there on the camera...how great is that? I could even turn a regular photo to black & white with the push of a button. So what's the problem you ask? ...and why the negative review?



Plain & simple the reviews were dead on...CAMERA DOESN'T TAKE GOOD PICTURES. I should add that it did take some clear pictures but if I had to assign a percentage I would say 80% of the picture were blurry. I read every review on how to adjust the ISO & everything else. I even took it to my buddy the camera tech geek. He had no luck in getting consistent quality pictures either. He said the camera was just "too gimicky." I took the camera out New Years Eve and out of the 20 or 30 pics we took...only 3 were good quality (very dissapointing). So while I loved the camera for it's options, size & touch-screen...it just didn't take consistent quality pictures.



I have since returned the camera and purchased a Cannon elph (dont remember the exact name or model). All I want is a small portable camera that takes reasonably good quality pictures. I don't know much about camera's at all and don't really want too...just want to shoot & view, print and most importantly capture memories. This new Cannon was cheaper and out of the box took great quality pictures...probably 90%-95% of my pics are crystal clear and I didn't have to do a thing...just point and click. I strongly recommend waiting until Nikon fixes the picture quality before buying. Hope this helps.

I was trying to decide between purchasing the D700 and the Canon 5D MkII. I liked the prospect of the significantly lower prices of the Canon lenses and slightly higher MP count of the 5D. But those differences don't necessarily lead to better pics. Well, I went with the Nikon and am simply amazed. I purchased the Nikon 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6G ED IF Autofocus VR Nikkor Zoom Lens, the Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Nikkor Wide Angle Zoom Lens, the Nikon 50mm f/1.4G SIC SW Prime Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras, the Nikon 105mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor Lens, the Nikon SB-900 AF Speedlight Flash for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras, and a pair of Lexar Professional Series UDMA 16 GB 300x CompactFlash Memory Card CF16GB-300-381 to go along with a couple of lenses I already had from a previous Nikon N8008. I used this camera on my family's Disney vacation during the week of Christmas to Jan 3. Photographing Disney at night was simply stunning with the D700. This is not to mention the incredible daylight photos it produces. The menus are very easy to navigate and setup your custom settings for different subject and lighting conditions. I was very tired of the poor results from the point-and-shoot cameras so I decided to take the plunge into real photography again. I've found a new hobby! One item that never ceases to amaze me is the auto focus ability of the D700. It just ALWAYS gets the subject in focus. I can't explain it any different than that. Even during low light conditions (night time) it's spot on. I had a great time taking night shots at Epcot. The results were awesome. The camera is a little heavy for a walkabout camera, but the results more than make up for the slight inconvenience it is.

Over the last 50 plus years I have owned and used a box Brownie, a Kodak 120 folding camera, a Graflex, three Leicas (2 of which were IIIgs), a Canon AE-1, a Nikon N70, a Nikon N80, a Nikon D100, and a Nikon D200. This is the first camera I have really liked since the Leica IIIg. I have been using it with the 24-70mm f2.8 lens and the picture quality is excellent.



Other reviews will give you more details and comparisons. I will simply say that this is the first camera since the Leica IIg that puts all the controls that I actually use at my fingertips. Combining that with the bright, clear, viewfinder I feel comfortable with the camera and can concentrate on composing the photograph.



The only shortcoming that I have noticed is that occasionally photos seem overexposed by half a stop. That is a subjective impression and since I always do a lot of post processing it does not matter much. I have not conducted exhaustive tests but the tendency to overexpose seems to disappear if I shift from matrix metering to center weighted metering.



I doubt that I will ever upgrade this body. Instead I will invest in lenses.

As a former f100 owner, I have strange feelings of deja-vu holding this camera and looking through it.



And then I realize how far things have come in the past 9 years.



This camera is what many have been waiting for. And it's about damn time!



Size? Check. Speed? Grab a grip and double check. Ease of use? Check. Compatibility with crazy old lenses? Check. Built in flash that commands useful multi light flash system that works in TTL? Check. Resolution for good 20x30's? Check. Insanely high ISO that looks better than film at 1600? Check. (?!) 51 point AF with tracking across all the points? Check (?!) Same price as a new F5 in 2000? Check (?!)



I can almost hear Phil Collins...because I've been waiting for this camera, for all my life.



Ok, but in all seriousness, this camera can do it all. If it can't, it's YOUR shortcoming as a photographer.



Of course it doesn't do video. Who cares?

I started with the Nikon D50 went to D80 D300, and wanted to move to full frame but the D3 was just to expensive for me. Once the D700 came out I was trilled to find it very similar to the D3, I order one immediately and it was the best decision ever.



I work as a wedding photographer and love full frame. I used the Canon 5D and 5D Mark II and was surprised how slow in terms of operation they where in comparison to the D700. When moment are happening I need a camera that reacts as fast as I do and I'm happy Nikon made it.



Amazing Low light, speed, easy of use, and now in a smaller package. What more can you ask for.

Full frame (FX) in a DX-size body. As easy to use as a D300 and really excellent image quality, especially in dim light. Very good for street photography when you prefer to keep a low profile. High ISO shooting without the noise of a DX sensor is the main reason that I purchased this camera body. I have a D3s body for REALLY low light/High ISO, but you aren't going to EVER be inconspicuous with a D3. This camera is virtually the same size as my D300s and even shares the MB-10 grip. Excellent. I have to look/touch closely to tell which body I have in the dark.
