 "Fabulous Camera For Grandparents" 2009-11-30
By ken
As new grandparents, my wife and I wanted to take photos as wonderful as our granddaughter. :-) We quickly discovered we needed a camera that would negotiate very dim indoor lighting without having to use flash. My wife also wanted a camera that would also be easy to use: turn the dial to Auto/No Flash, zoom, focus, shoot. I wanted a camera I could customize in about every way possible. We considered the D700, but ruled it out because of size and weight, not to mention price. Then we looked at the D300 and ruled it out for similar reasons. While looking at the D300, however, we ran into the D90, a very lucky break indeed. As far as we could tell (and we're amateurs), the D90 blew away the D300 in very low light shooting. The results of the D90 are simply amazing no matter what the lighting. The camera is large enough to be comfortable in my hands and light enough my wife doesn't mind carrying it around. It's a surprisingly easy camera to figure out, especially with the help of a few Web sites and Nikon's lengthy D90 manual. The biggest surprise to me is that photos shot using Auto/No Flash are almost always better than photos shot with tweaked settings. We're shooting RAW, and straight out of Adobe PS3/4, the photos are ready to print. I'm sure we'll grow into this powerful camera and learn what wonders tweaking can accomplish, but it's great to be able to lean on the D90's intuition while we're in the process of developing our own. We did a LOT of research, comparing, and shopping to find the right camera, and the D90 is the perfect fit for us. I usually have second thoughts after a major purpose, but with the D90, my only regret is that I didn't find it earlier.

I picked up Nikon's 24-85mm AF-S for peanuts on eBay, and it beats the kit lens hands down. I also picked up the Nikon AF-S 18-200mm VR that other reviewers have recommended; it's matches up superbly with the D90. My recommendation is to buy the body only and then match it up with a lens that best suits your needs. Amazon's price for the D90 is very competitive, plus Amazon makes exchanges easy if a problem turns up (true of other dealers? not so much). Same for whatever lens you buy--Amazon's prices are very competitive. Use eBay to pick up high quality Nikon clear filers to protect your lenses. eBay is also a cheap source for a backup battery. The battery that comes with the D90 recharges quickly and lasts a surprisingly long time on a full charge. Still, there's no reason not to have a charged backup.

I must admit my wife and I went into the search for the right photos-of-granddaughter camera with misgivings. What we were after seemed to require a very expensive pro camera. Happily, we found the D90, an extraordinary camera that's both user friendly and capable far beyond our amateur needs. Even priced 50% higher, the D90 would be the best buy out there.

get the body and think about investing in the 18-200mm VR nikkor lens.

"Great Buy For the Price" 2009-11-19
By David Delisio
First off I want to say that I have used this camera for a year now. I am a semi pro, which means I earn a little on the side with photography. I also upgraded from a D50 to this camera. I originally wanted to upgrade to the D300 but for the price and what I use it for I decided to go with the D90. Almost the same sensor and I really didn't need the tank build of the 300. The weather proofing would have been nice though.

So far I have been very pleased with my choice. The low light capability up to 3200 iso is fantastic. 6400 is pushing it though. It focuses quickly in lowlight. The body fits comfortably in my hand without it feeling too small like the D40/60/5000. It may feel a bit small if you have large hands though. The battery life compared to my D50 is fantastic. The battery, however, is a bit slower to get out if I need to change quickly. You actually have to pull it out instead of it sliding out practically on it's own. The display in the back is awesome. It may actually be too bright though. I have done alot of Fight promo shots on black backrounds where it's hard to use the histogram to see if your lighting is right. On the display they looked good. Once downloaded I had to boost the exposure by as much as 1 stop. I really can't review the jpg setting as I always shoot in RAW. As far as RAW goes, I read a post on here where someone complained that all his software didn't support the new raw format. No need to buy new software, just download a small file from the Nikon website that allows compatibility with most software. The adobe site has it also. I LOVE the "My Menu" feature.

As far as the video goes. If you are buying this camera for videoing, don't. It's a nice little gimmick and can be convienient to use in some instances, but it's not a video camera. If you want to video, buy a video camera.

I have had a few problems with this camera. The most annoying is when it just stops working because it thinks no lens is attached. I have really only had this problem with my Tamron lenses and can't remember it happening with the Nikons. It was easily fixed by unseating then reseating the lens. I have also lost autofocus with the Tamrons and it was fixed in the same way. When you are actually working with a client this can be both embarassing and annoying. This is the biggest reason I gave this camera only 4 stars.

Bottom line is this is a fantastic camera for both beginners and advanced photographers. [...]

 "The wonderful D90" 2009-11-05
By Arthur Samuels (Southfield, MI)
This camera is an upgrade for me from the D70. The D70 was a good camera however; the D90 is a great camera. I've had it for about 3 weeks now and it takes great pictures. I've taken well over a 1000 photos to date. I also brought the SB-900 flash to go with the camera and the two combine work superbly. The thermal overload protection on SB-900 is annoying but that for a different review. Back to the D-90...I currently have not nor do I in the near future plan to use this camera for video so I cannot comment on the video ability of this camera. I'm having too much fun with stills. There are a lot of value added features on this camera. The features I've used the most so far are Commander Mode, Automatic Bracketing and in some post production processes including the D-lighting, filter effects, color balance and image overlay on a some what regular basis. But you don't want to over do it. These processes eat up your battery. The best feature and a great tool for me is the ability to use the camera in the Commander Mode and control several flash units directly from the camera. I've used it with both SB-800 and SB-900 flash units and it works flawlessly. I also like the feel of the camera in my hands. I fits comfortably in my rather large hands and I can reach all the controls without twisting my fingers in knots. I am just using the Live View screen to view the camera setting. It certainly makes it easier to read than look at the readout on top of the camera especially in dim lighting.

I'm a beginner at photography and I bought this lens for my Nikon D60 camera. This is my first prime lens and I purchased it mainly for taking pictures in low light situations. This lens is working great with my camera and the pictures come out excellent. This lens exceeds what you would expect for the price.

"35mm is my new favorite lens" 2009-11-16
By Patrick G. Parker (Antioch, TN United States)
I was looking for a low light lens, this one fits the bill perfectly. The depth of field is exceptional, and has really added a nice look to my indoor shots. I am using it on a D5000 so it acts closer to a 50mm lens which is perfect for indoor shots in my opinion. The only thing with the lens, I wish it had a shorter focal distance, but that is very minor. Awesome lens, the best AF-S prime lens you can get for the money I think.

This is a great lense, especially for DSLR beginners. I use this lense with my D80 and I am not planning on removing unless I need to do some zoom shots. The focus is not as fast or quiet as other lenses, but that does not bother me one bit. I was able to take a shot of the Halloween decorations in my neigborhood without flash or tripod and still get a crisp, beautiful shot!

I have a Nikon d3000 (Nikons new entry level dslr not the d300) and really want this lens. I have shot with the 50 mm f1.4 lens before and it autofocuses just fine, but I was wondering if this lens would autofocus on my camera. If I have to manually focus it is not a big dealI just want to know before I buy it if this lens would autofocus. Anyone who caould answer my question that would be really helful.

"Would be cool if the D40 didn't suck." 2009-11-25
By Ian Flanigan (Simi Valley, CA)
I usually shoot Canon, but due to many other reason I'm stuck with a Nikon D40 for now. I don't really know anything about Nikon, but I figured this would be a rad lens. The problem is that it won't auto focus on the D40. I know I know, I should have researched it more and learned about it, but really? Come on, who makes a camera this day and age that can't auto focus with certain lenses. Whatever, I'm returning it and getting the 35mm 1.8. I played it with it a bit and it had some really nice results. Amazon also got it to be super quick, overnight actually.

 "Great lens - 7 out of 5 stars!!!" 2009-11-22
By G. Joseph
I found so many different sites that all had reviews that pointed to this lens - and they were all totally correct.

To sum it up this lens is amazing.

Build quality is pretty good. Pictures come out very sharp. It focuses really fast probably since its so compact and light.

And on top of all this its price less is than $150!!! I think its the cheapest lens that Nikon makes.

I am so glad I brought it.

"Don't discount the lens mount error" 2009-11-08
By D90 Owner
The D90 was my first step into DSLR and I chose Nikon because of 20+ years of good past experience with a rock-solid (and very basic!) N2000 and later the digital Coolpix 950. I bought my D90 in June 2009 and for several thousand images it fell in the category "you shouldn't ever feel this close to an inanimate object". I like the way it feels in my hand and its weight isn't a problem for me, although I've seen a few negative comments about that. I'm happy with the bright display. The batteries have lasted well. The controls are where they should be for a Nikon. It was solid: you can easily freeze the hummingbird in the air and the water droplets falling from a dolphin at its apex. It had the kind of responsiveness that you'll recall if you've worked with plain old SLRs (and minus the "lag" of the older non-SLR Coolpix!).

It'd be safe to say I love almost everything about the camera...*except* that I've recently run into the F-- lens mount error. I'd read Amazon reviews before buying the camera, but blew off what people had written

You can read more about the problem (and 18-135 lens kit) here:

[...]

and in the results of a Google search of "d90 lens error" or similar.

I've removed the lens, cleaned the contacts, etc. but quite often now I'll be squeezing a shot and nothing...sometimes jiggling the lens or remounting fixes the problem. Even slight pressure on the side of the zoom can correct the problem.

All I can really say about the problem is that if you don't have it, you'll probably love the D90. If you *do* have it, it's really a deal breaker. In any situation with a moving/changing subject, you almost never have a second chance once you've nudged the lens a bit and tried to clear it. And having that confidence in your equipment that it will work reliably when you need it is unspeakably important.

Without the lens mount/electrical contact error, I'd give the camera the highest rating. As is, I now have to figure out what the Nikon terms are on servicing the camera, determine where to send it, etc. All I really want now is to have this camera back working correctly because I think it's a beautiful piece of technology when working.

"Great camera for the enthuisiast." 2009-11-05
By personaV
I got this camera for my wife because she has an unexplored interest in photography, and she absolutely loves it. She went from not knowing the difference between iso and aperture to being able to fine tune the camera to get the image she wanted. The shots are far from perfect but they definitely have a beautiful professional look to them.

I work in video and film production and so i have a great appreciation for the tremendous level of control the camera gives you. Huge iso/shutter ranges, it would be nice to have a quicker lens though. We have figured out a majority of the controls thanks to the easily accessible manual and quick manual and good old fashioned playing around.

The best part we've found is that even without painstakingly setting manual settings the camera takes beautiful pictures on it's automatic settings. Our real gems up to this point have come from manual settings, but that just means we have lots of room to improve.

An SDHC card is a good addition for quick read/write functionality.

This is a fantastic camera to help the photography enthuisiast or professional to create stunning photos well above it's price.

Over all the Camera is good. it takes great pics and the quality is good. But my camera is just 2 months old and it already started acting up. The most annoying was, I see the error F-- very often right in the middle of taking pictures.. i went through all online blogs and tried everything and the problem still persists.. I think lot of people are having this issue, Is Nikon aware of it and doing anything about it?.

 "Great shooter" 2009-11-02
By Nick A. Spang (Seattle, WA USA)
This is a great camera. I've been shooting with point-and-shoots for years, opting for the Canon Digital Elph line of cameras. The limitations of the point-and-shoots in action sequences, low light, or difficult lighting became too frustrating, so I finally made the plunge and bought a D-90. The camera is beautifully capable of handing all the situations I find myself in, for example hiking, at parties, cycling, and for portraits. The ability to shoot at 4.5 fps, take photos in low light, and adjust any function on the fly to try different approaches have made my experience of photography much more gratifying.

 "Excellent starter flash!" 2009-11-19
By Jeffrey Orr (Redwood City, CA)
I have a Nikon D60, and its little built-in flash can't quite keep up with the photography I do (shooting in dark hotel lobbies, homes, et cetera). What a difference this SB-600 flash makes!

The AF grid that the flash projects (IR, so it's not visible) really helps my camera focus in lower light conditions. It still has trouble with some things, like mascot costume faces (where is the face? confused!), but it's still an improvement over not using the SB-600.

I may want to get the SB-800 at some point, but I'm happy for now!

I bought this lens few days ago and have been using it on my D90 with Tamron 18-270 and Nikon 18-200 lens. The bounce flash off ceiling is so much better and natural looking than using the flash on the camera! I'm impressed. I bought it with Amazon's excellent return policy to give it a test run. I'm definitely keeping it. I also like that we can use AA batteries if needed in an emergency. I'm running them off eneloops right now. I took some great portraits of my daughter bouncing the flash off the ceiling and I'm impressed! I never knew before a friend of mine recommended this to go with my new D90 that an external flash will do so much difference. Sometimes it is true that you get what you pay for and in this case very well worth it. :-)

I had 2 SB800s. One was stolen and I didn't want to buy the SB900, since it is huge and expensive and I mainly only used one flash, so the other would be back-up. I figured after reading some reviews to get this little guy instead.

Upon arrival I was pleasantly surprised on how efficient and light it is. The power output is better than I thought and it works just as well as the SB800 in almost every respect. I shot a wedding with it after purchase and the photos came out great!

Extremely happy with this purchase!

 "Great flash gun" 2009-11-02
By Mr. Richard Buttle (Ireland)
I bought this to go with my Nikon D40 to learn more with flash photography. I was considering the sb-400 first but I though about the difference in price and what the actual difference in result would be. I am glad I spend the money on this over the smaller one. Being able to control the light power in the steps it does gives good control over.It gives great light for indoor party photos and out doors for off camera flash. It is not too heavy on a D40. If you have a 55-200mm vr lens, it is balanced nice.

The NIKON D40 flash will not trigger this!! You need an optical slave or a remote unit or a ttl cable for remote triggering.

It is easy to use straight out of the box. Put in your batteries, turn it on and attach to the camera and you are ready to go. Then you can read the manual and find out about the custom settings that you can use. So far, it seems to be ok on batteries. I managed to take about 400 photos while messing around with it and there was no sign of a low battery light.

I left it for a few days though and came back, turned it on and it was making funny noises. I recharged the batteries and it was back to normal, so it was a power issue.

I bought a set of remote triggers also to use with this for off camera flash and it is a great set up for the price. If you are thinking about the sb-800, I would consider saving the money and getting one of these instead, unless you need the extras.

I cant say anything bad about it yet, but then again I am not that experienced. Some gels and a white card would be nice if they came with it though.

"GREAT CAMERA FOR A FIRST TIME DIGITAL CAMERA OWNER." 2009-11-13
By Michelle R. Sherer (Yorktown Heights, New York USA)
THIS WAS A GIFT FOR MY 9 YEAR OLD GRANDDAUGHTER'S BIRTHDAY. SHE LOVED THE DARK BLUE COLOR AND THE EASE OF USING IT...AS SHE GETS COMFORTABLE WITH THE CAMERA, SHE WILL BE ABLE TO USE ALL THE SETTINGS THAT ARE AVAILABLE...THEY ARE VERY EASY TO SELECT, AND THAT GIANT SCREEN FOR VIEWING IS JUST FABULOUS...I PLAYED WITH IT AND JUST LOVED ALL THE THINGS YOU CAN CHOOSE...ALSO THE FACT THAT IT USES 2 AA BATTERIES WAS A GREAT FEATURE, BUT THE BATTERIES DIDN'T SEEM TO LAST TOO LONG...I DON'T KNOW IF THIS WILL BE A COMMON THING, OR SHE JUST SNAPPED SO MANY PICTURES THE FIRST WEEK. TIME WILL TELL WITH THAT...

I AM PLANNING ON BUY MYSELF A COOLPIX CAMERA IN THE NEAR FUTURE.

If you are looking for quality pictures invest more money and purchase a higher quality camera. This camera is adequate for my needs as I purchased it for one reason... to be able to put it in my jacket pocket and take pictures while on motorcycle rides. For that purpose the camera does as advertised.

I will say the camera arrived in good order and delivery was extremely prompt.

       "Great Value & Portability" 2009-11-10

Although this is my first personal digital camera, I have used my wife's camera for several years but got tired of losing editorial control...no different from the TV remote control. You husbands will understand.

I actually bought this model in September as a 9th birthday gift for my grandson and he immediately began using it without the need to read the instructions. Kids...

That impressed me so I bought the same Coolpix L20 for myself to use on long distance bicycle trips as well as supplementing our family digital camera. I too was able to learn its method of operation with minimal assistance from the users manual and even found some great features which the 9 year old hasn't yet discovered. The idea was for us to have the same camera so we could teach each other how best to use it.

I've used my Coolpix L20 now for a month and really love it's simplicity and ease of use, even taking videos. Its 10 MP chip provides plenty of data with which to edit and store great pictures. However, the delay in acquiring data to the memory card makes taking action shots such as sporting events nearly impossible. You will get blured pictures 90% of the time. Acquiring jpegs to your desk top is simple once you load the Nikon software. Be sure to temporarily disable the anti virus software first. Best of all, the Coolpix L20 is lightweight and easily stores in your pocket and I like the fact that it runs on AA batteries. And I was amazed at how inexpensive it was. It will be a perfect camera to supplement our existing one.

I'm one of the last people to jump on the digital camera bandwagon and boy, did I luck out by purchasing the Nikon Coolpix L20 camera. It is very easy to use, just point and click with great picture quality. I'm very pleased!
