 "Opteka EN-EL3E Won't Work In New Nikon D90" 2009-12-23
By S. Kaplan (Marin County, CA, USA)
Purchased the Opteka EN-EL3E for my new Nikon D90. Charged it in the Nikon charger and even though the charger shows it charged the D90 shows it is not so battery will not work in D90. Contacted 47st Photo with two emails asking to return for replacement and they do not answer. Save your money and your time and buy a genuine Nikon battery, at least their support people answer you!

Save yourself some trouble and buy the real Nikon battery. The new EN-EL3e is an improved battery from it's predecessor. I purchased this Opteka for my D90 and it DID NOT recognize it. If I were you I would not risk it. It was cheap enough for me to try, but not worth the money or RISK of you do try it on your Nikon and something goes wrong so I am returning it to Amazon. From now on, I play no games an only buy Nikon original stuff. Amazon has a very good price on the Nikon branded battery. You pay for what you get, in this case I got nothing though ;-)

 "Not reliable" 2009-12-16
By David E. Turner (Hollywood, MD)
I have been using this product for 3 months. First couple days of use camera began to display low battery indicator earlier than expected. I installed another spare and continued. This went on a few times before I recieved a low battery indicator after fully charging it. I removed the battery and reinstalled and this went away. Now every time I use it and recieve a premature low battery indicator I just remove the battery and reinsert it and it clears. This hasn't hurt me yet but I know a disappointment will be lingering in the future when I miss a shot because of an invalid low battery indicator. Sometimes it happens after 5 shots sometimes after 50 but never has it actually been low. I suppose for some reason the contacts aren't making up completely. I am using original nikon batteries from now on.

"This battery cannot be charged for D90" 2009-12-12
By S. Tsoy (San Francisco)
After purchasing this spare replacement battery (Opteka EN-EL3e)for my D90, I found that it could not be charged by Nikon Charger.

When I asked Nikon custom service, they said D90 does not support 3rd party battery. I am still waiting for the firm reply from the vendor after 2 weeks time of purchase. The reply from the vendor seems a little bit slow. May be I need to return it for refund later?

"Do not recommend~~You can get a better camera for same price range" 2009-12-29
By KiKi (PA)
First off I'm not a "newbie" when it comes to digital cameras and as much as I wanted to like this camera it was returned. Even my 9 yr old (who the camera was bought for) thought the pictuers were horrible.

Pros:

*Easy to use. The menu layout was simple and easy to navigate even for a 9 yr old.

*Touch screen works well and is fun to use--Reason my son was set on this particular camera.

*Many "auto" scenes to chose from

Cons:

*Screen is horrible. Everything looks grainy on the screen.

*Picture quality is mediocre at best. Pictures do look better once uploaded to a computer compared to the screen, but the camera does not take consistent good pictures. It's hit or miss and most when fully enlarged are just horrible. If you're going to just print small pictues 5 by 7 or smaller they'd probably turn out OK, but anything larger you will probably see the "noise" in the prints.

*Video quality is not the greatest--very grainy even in good light conditions

I played with this camera for days on different settings and could not get it to take good consistent pictures. I ended up returning the Nikon and picked up a Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-inch LCD (Dark Gray). It may not have a "cool" touchscreen but the pictures are awesome.

I've purchased several HP and Kodak camera's in the past but this is the first time I've owned/tried a Nikon and must say that it's the best by far. I love the touch screen and the option of being able to write your messages right onto the picture. I would definitely purchase from Nikon again.

when I saw this item, S230; I thought it was like S225 but with touchscreen. It turned out to be similar to S220, which is together with this one a waste of money. Pictures taken are usually blur, or have lots of back-light dots. Auto mode is really crappy :S:S:S totally dissatisfied with it. Thought for being a Nikon it'd have been a better product. Couldn't be more wrong. For less price I can get a Casio that does much better with less money. So.. no.... it's not good.

"Ok, but not for the price" 2009-12-19
By Kroy Rowe (Salt Lake City, UT)
I bought this camera because our old GE was lost on our last trip. I saw the ad for it, and thought the touch screen was pretty cool! I am taking it back as SOON as the Christmas mall rush is over. It is small, which is good for some, and bad for others. It was ok at first, but it is just too small to hold on to to take the picture. That is MINOR and I could live with it. The thing I can't is the blurry pictures! My old camera, a GE A730 took the best pictures! My kids could be running and if I took the picture, it was clear as a bell. With this camera, every picture I took of my child opening a present was blurry. If there is ANY movement at all, it is blurry. I read all the reviews about changing the ISO, or using the correct setting for the picture you are taking, but nothing helped. I even used the sport setting, figuring of COURSE that would be a setting that could compensate for motion, and it did a LITTLE better, but not much. With 4 active kids, there is no way this camera will work for me! Again, all the research I did about reading the manual, or changing the setting didn't work at all! I am on the computer right now trying to find my old GE A730 to buy again....now THAT is a great camera!

 "Exceptional All-Around Performer" 2009-12-23
By Dr. Norge
The 18-200 VR II is an all-around great lens. While it is not "the best" lens available for any single role, it stays mounted on my D90 a large majority of the time. When I don't want to haul around a bag full of gear, this is the lens I take without a thinking twice. Clearly, Nikon had to make some tough choices in balancing the features of this lens, trying to satisfy a wide range of users and applications. Here is my take on where they ended up.

This lens IS:

- Remarkably versatile with an 11x zoom factor

- Surprisingly sharp at all focal lengths

- Very good for outdoor sports in good light

- Useful for almost-macro close-up work

- Solid enough to not require kid-glove treatment

- Usable in many indoor situations with the VR system

- Reasonably sized, considering the zoom range

This lens IS NOT:

- Very fast, especially racked out

- For low-light sports photography

- A pro-level all-metal "indestructable" lens

- Well-suited for low-light shooting

- Compact or lightweight

As noted by other reviewers, the minor distortion and corner fall-off is easily remedied via post-processing software. While many use Photoshop, I recommend DxO Optics Pro software. It has very effective custom modules for this lens and many Nikon DSLRs that work extremely well.

The most pleasant surprise for me with this lens is how good it works for "almost-macro" photography. I also have the heavy and expensive Nikon 105mm f/2.8 VR Micro, which is without a doubt the sharpest lens in my bag. However, some of the best close-up shots of bees, flowers, etc that I have taken came from the 18-200, for two reasons. First, unless I am out on a "macro safari" I don't generally have the 105 mounted, so it isn't always "at the ready" for targets of opportunity. Second, with the 18-200 racked out to 200mm, it focuses about 8 inches from the front of the lens (which equates to just over 19 inches from the sensor), which provides a pretty decent close-in range. For lower light or extreme macro situations, the 105 is still the superior lens, but the 18-200 does much better than I had ever hoped for when pressed into macro service.

"A good all round lens" 2009-12-16
By Anthony Loh (NY, USA)
I also own the previous version together with this one. Why two? I have a D90 and a D300S and often go out and take photos together with my wife. We both love the flexibility and versatility of this lense.

This VRII version has the same optical quality as the previous version with the exception of a creep-lock, and it cost a couple hundreds dollar more. Not worth the extra money.

This is a good lens (fast focus, nice build, quiet), but not optically superior (ok in sharpness but not great), and still expensive. However, this is the one I almost always take with me wherever I go, although I will pair it with other lenses (e.g., a Nikkor 35mm f1.8g, Tokina 11-16mm f2.8, Nikkor 60mm f2.8g micro, Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 VC, etc.) depending on what I shoot that day.

If you have the $$$ and need a versatile and flexible super zoom lense, go for this one. Otherwise, a used previous version of this lens is equally good.

 "Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S ED VR II" 2009-12-13
By Teunis D. Baas
I have had the earlier version on my D200 but due to a problem with the focus motor sent it in for repair. At the same time decided to change the D200 for a D300s. Since I could not wait for 6 weeks for the orignal 18-200mm to come back I decided to buy another Nikon 18-200mm lens. I believe this lens to be the most versitile for Nikon DSLR - if I could only have one lens this would be it.

"great all around though a bit lacking" 2009-12-02
By lemonhedo (philadelphia, PA)
This is probably the so called "lens to rule them all" lens from nikon, well not that great, but it could very well substitute for many lens one may potentially have. For starters, this phat barrel can go from 18mm all the way to 200mm (duh*). Though it isn't that much of a fast lens, the aperture is sufficient for almost all daylight activity in the focal range. For people who just got into the dslr system, this is the lens to get.

In my pouch, I have this lens and the 35mm f1.8 prime lens for my portrait shots and night shots. I had not need to switch out the 18-200mm when I go out to take pictures, and that shows how awesome this lens is. Definitely recommended!

 "Very Good Intro Lens" 2009-12-01
By J. Montgomery (Colorado, USA)
I've used this lens and its predecessor extensively and I've been happy with both. They are clear, accurate, and focused. You can find a zillion reviews talking about how awesome this lens. I'm going to highlight the lens' shortcomings. This is not a be all, end all lens. Don't get me wrong, this is my walkaround lens and it stays on my camera 75% of the time. But it's important to know what this lens won't do.

1. Low light. This is a problem that plagues any reasonably priced long-range zoom. If you're going to be doing much shooting indoors, at night, or twilight with this lens, invest in a good quality flash.

2. Bokeh. The majority of the out-of-focus fields look great. However, if you're shooting wide open (low f stop) and there's a lot going on in the background (long grass, trees, etc) some of the finer details can be blurred or occasionally have a weird halo look to them. It's not that big of an issue, but it does happen from time to time.

3. Distortion. Very manageable and hardly noticeable for the most part, but when you shoot things that are obviously supposed to be very straight (buildings, roads, etc)at less than about 50mm there is some pincushioning. This is easily correctable in photoshop.

4. Light falloff. In low-light and long-exposure pictures, you can clearly see some falloff in the corners. Again, hardly a big deal for most photography.

5. Weight. If you're not used to big lenses, this will take some getting used to, especially if you're upgrading from a kit lens.

6. Filters. The 72mm size is getting more popular, but there still aren't nearly as many filters available as some other sizes. There are resizing rings to compensate if you already have some larger rings, or are eyeballing something in particular.

Ok, this was not meant to turn you off of this lens, only to give you a grounded sense of what this lens has to offer. It is a great walkaround lens for everyday use. It is also a great lens for people looking to get their foot in the door with high quality lenses without having spend too much. This won't replace prime lenses, fast lenses, and superzooms. This is a perfect lens to buy if can only afford, or only want one lens. I would still hate to be without this lens. Highly recommended.

 "horrible camera" 2009-12-13
By Melina Todd (west chester pa)
This camera took the most horrible pictures. I bought it through ButterflyPhoto. My little girls were in a wedding and what should have been great pics, turned out grainy and discolored. It states its 10mp but the camera says 7.4. The return process for ButterflyPhto was HORRIBLE. I place numerous phone calls in which NOONE could give me a straight answer. It took them at least 2 weeks to get me a replacement (never again to be Nikon) and that was with expedited shipping already paid for! I got the Cannon Elph 1100 and it ROCKS!

I have had two of these go from working to DOA and the charger not even recognize there is a battery in it. I called Nikon and was told by a very rude customer service person that Nikon offers no warranty at all on their batteries. One of these batteries had been charged three times and the other 10 times at most. Don't waste your money on the Nikon brand. Not sure how much you can say here... It's a Nikon battery. I've bought off-brand batteries before and had bad luck. So, I won't do that again. Bought this one as a backup for my D5000. A backup battery, in my mind, is a must have item. I can't tell you how many times I've been taking photos and found the battery to be running low. With a backup, you just swap batteries and keep shooting. Got it fast, in good condition, free shipping and at a much better price than in store.
